Gut zehn Kilometer südöstlich von Fortrose nähern wir uns Waipapa Point. Schon aus einiger Entfernung sehen wir den markanten Leuchtturm im gleißenden Sonnenlicht.
Waipapa Point bildet eine Art Ecke in den südlichen Pazifik hinein. Zwar gibt es noch zwei, drei Stellen der Südinsel, die ein wenig weiter südlich liegen, aber nach übereinstimmenden Angaben diverser Reiseführer sind sie weniger attraktiv. Dieser Punkt ist wirklich sehenswert, mit Strand, Felsen und Kelp unmittelbar unter dem Leuchtturm. Hinzu kommen sehr neuseeländisch grüne Weiden mit Schafen und Lämmern.
About ten kilometers southeast of Fortrose, we approach Waipapa Point. From a distance, we see the striking lighthouse in the glistening sunlight.
Waipapa Point forms a kind of corner into the southern Pacific. Although there are two or three places in the South Island, which are a little further south, but according to the same information from various travel guides they are less attractive. This point is really worth seeing, with sandy beach, rocks and kelp just below the lighthouse. There are also very New Zealand green pastures with sheep and lambs.
Auf halbem Weg vom Parkplatz, den wir als Stellplatz für die Nacht nutzen, zum Leuchtturm steht etwas abseits eine beeindruckende, vom Wind geduckte und zerzauste Baumreihe.
Halfway from the parking lot, which we use as a pitch for the night, to the lighthouse a bit off stands an impressive, crouched by the wind and disheveled row of trees.
Die Sonne versinkt, vom Parkplatz aus gesehen, direkt hinter dem Leuchtturm im Meer. Und dann haben wir auch noch Vollmond.
