Im Yukon, das etwa 11/2 mal so groß wie Deutschland ist, gibt es 14 Highways und acht Nebenstraßen. Die Bezeichnung Highway darf nicht mit Autobahn oder Ähnlichem verwechselt werden, es handelt sich lediglich um Hauptverkehrsstraßen. Ein Großteil davon sind Schotterstraßen (Gravel Roads, in der Karte oben gestrichelt gezeichnet). Drei der Highways sind nur 11, 9 bzw. 3 km lang, zwei andere sind für Mietfahrzeuge gesperrt, weil sie in zu schlechtem Zustand sind.
Wir wollen den fast 600 km langen Robert Campbell Highway (Hwy 4) von Watson Lake nach Carmacks befahren. Diese Strecke ist wenig frequentiert, daher gilt sie als gut für Wildtierbeobachtungen. Wir fahren also den Alaska Highway (Hwy 1) nach Osten in Richtung Watson Lake.
On the Alaska Highway to the east
In the Yukon, which is about 11/2 times the size of Germany, there are 14 highways and eight secondary roads. The term „highway“ may not be confused with a motorway or similar, it is merely a main road. Many of them are gravel roads, shown in dashed lines in the map above. Three of the highways are only 11, 9 or 3 km long, two others are restricted for rental vehicles because they are in too bad a condition.
We want to drive the nearly 600 km long Robert Campbell Highway (Hwy 4) from Watson Lake to Carmacks. This route is not very frequented, so it is considered to be good for wildlife viewing. We head east on the Alaska Highway (Hwy 1) towards Watson Lake.
Bei Johnsons Crossing führt eine Brücke über den Teslin River. Kurz dahinter zweigt die Canol Road ab (Hwy 6), die nur von Allradfahrzeugen mit großer Bodenfreiheit befahren werden darf. Hier am Abzweig finden wir einen großen Platz, auf dem wir die Nacht verbringen.
At Johnsons Crossing, a bridge crosses the Teslin River. Shortly after, the Canol Road branches off (Hwy 6), which can only be driven by all-wheel-drive vehicles with high clearance. Here at the branch we find a large place where we spend the night.
