Alaska Highway southbound

A detour to Northway in the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge is depressing for us. The beautiful landscape of the surroundings is contrasted by a place that appears depressive to us. The gray sky reinforces this mood. We get an impression that the lives of native people and the social reality of the USA may not be compatible. In Canada, where these people are very much respected as „First Nations“, we have not seen such a depressing scenario.

On the left and right of the Alaska Highway, which we continue to the southeast, there are worth seeing lakes and stream courses again and again.

A few kilometers north of the border with Canada, the effects of the permafrost soil (see also ‚Dempster Highway‚ and ‚Bis Faro und zurück‚) are very vividly to be seen: telegraph masts on the roadside are sunk into the defrosted ground and tipped in all directions. But also the road has shifted.

The border control stations of the United States and Canada on the Alaska Highway near Beaver Creek in Yukon are about 18 km apart. Some ten kilometers further south we find a pitch for the night on a large car park at the highway. Typical here are, as on many highway car parks and all public campgrounds in Yukon, the toilets. To avoid being surprised by a bear at the worst moment, it is strictly forbidden to go „behind a bush“. For this, the frequent toilets are bear safe.
