Die quadratische Altstadt von Dali, schachbrettartig angelegt, vollständig von einer Stadtmauer umgeben, mit Stadttoren in allen vier Himmelsrichtungen, gilt als Vorbild der chinesischen Stadt. Sie ist eine hübsche, historische, teils beschauliche, teils quirlige kleine Stadt, auf Karten leicht zu verwechseln mit der gleichnamigen neuen Stadt 20 km südlich. Durch die Hauptstraßen fließen kanalisierte Bäche, die aus den Bergen gespeist werden. Das Wasser wird zur Bewässerung der vielen Grünpflanzen und zum Wegspülen des Straßenstaubs genutzt. So macht die Stadt stets einen frischen Eindruck. Das Zentrum Dalis ist voller Touristen aus aller Welt, aber insbesondere aus China.
Old town with charm
The square old town of Dali, chessboard-like, completely surrounded by a city wall, with city gates in all four cardinal directions, is considered the model of the Chinese city. It is a pretty, historical, partly tranquil, partly lively little town, to be easily confused on maps with the new city of the same name 20 km south. Through the main roads flow canalised brooks, which are fed from the mountains. The water is used to irrigate the many green plants and to rinse the road dust. Thus the city always makes a fresh impression. The center of Dali is full of tourists from all over the world, but especially from China.
