Schwanenschwarz

english:

Swan Black

„White as the plumage of a swan“ is, according to the German language reference ‘Duden’ the meaning of „swan white“. That does not apply here. In the Shoal Bay at Torndirrup, opposite Albany, a large number of black swans are swimming. To enhance the black impression, cormorants and dark-feathered ducks have mixed in between. Only a pelican provides a bright splash of color.

Torndirrrup National Park

South of Albany, the Torndirrrup National Park juts like a tongue into the Southern Indian Ocean (for Australians: Southern Ocean). Its outstanding attractions (in the literal sense of the word) include rock formations surrounded by spray. The ‘Natural Bridge’ is hollowed out by the sea. Surf pushes spectacular into ‘The Gap’ between two rock walls.

West Cape Howe NP

West of the Torndirrrup National Park, West Cape Howe National Park juts out into the Southern Ocean as the southernmost tip of Western Australia. A barely developed, narrow road leads to Shelley Beach. From the parking lot above, the beach is within walking distance. But first we enjoy the fantastic view over the headland and the beach in front of us.

Shelley Beach

Other seagulls seem to watch them in disbelief. The turquoise-blue seawater and the crystal-clear surf catch our attention.

english:

Storm surge in the bathtub

Fifteen kilometers west of the town of Denmark, on the south coast of Western Australia, lies Greens Pool. The local tourism advertisement enthusiastically explains that this „paradise“ with waveless, still waters in the William Bay National Park is almost completely protected by round boulders from the waves of the Southern Ocean. Today, the ocean mocks this description. Storm whips the sea against the rocks and up the beach, the air is saturated with salt water. However, this is not the North Sea coast in the fall but Australia in the spring and so again and again glistening sunlight breaks through the storm clouds and lets the sea, the spray and the wild romantic beach shine.

On the Rainbow Coast, the south coast of Western Australia, one national park joins the other. The coast at Walpole is georgeously rugged and only a few beaches are accessible by two-wheel-drive vehicles. One of them is Conspicuous Beach. Because of strong surf and submerged rocks swimming is not recommended. Surfers are here sometimes, though. But today the storm rages even too much.

Great Forest Trees Drive

Through these spectacular forests, a simple 48 km long ring road leads as a one-way street: the Great Forest Trees Drive. Here there are the giant Karri trees, but also other eucalyptuses, like Jarrah and Marri. Between the trees we discover again and again wildflowers unknown to us. At the end of the northern half ring we reach again the South Western Highway, which crosses the National Park tunnel-like.

english:

At last „roos“

On our hitherto trip through Central and Western Australia we have seen many dead kangaroos on the highways (apparently they are run over there by Road Trains at night). Alive we could only observe some for a few minutes at Torndirrup in the dusk. All the greater is our surprise at the evening walk over the Molloy Caravan Park. A group of kangaroos (shortened called „roos“ by the natives) mow the lawn between the rented cabins. Apparently they are used to the proximity of humans, because they only keep a short distance from us.

Cape Leeuwin

english:

The first known ship to have visited the southwesternmost point of Australia was in 1622 the Dutch Leeuwin (‘Lioness’). After it the Cape is named. In 1895 the shining white lighthouse was opened here. From its viewing platform we have a spectacular view of the surf. In Australia the Cape is considered the point where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. From here to the next cape, the 100 km north Cape Naturaliste (also with a lighthouse), the Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park ranges.

english:

They are thrombolites, biogenic sedimentary rocks. Like the better-known stromatolites that existed a little earlier, they are said to have started creating the oxygen atmosphere of our planet using photosynthesis a few billion years ago. They are located in Lake Clifton in Yalgorup National Park, south of Mandurah. The access is perfectly designed with a boardwalk across the lake shore. A bird on the railing of the boardwalk attracts more of our attention than the lumps in the water. And on the way back we discover some white cockatoos in the grass.

Peel Inlet

Along the southern west coast of Australia stretches between Perth and Bunbury a chain of lakes and estuaries, including Lake Clifton. Peel Inlet, just south of Mandurah, is one of the largest of these waters. It is classified as a „Wetland of International Importance“. For cormorants this is obviously a good area. We also observe pelicans here in large numbers.
