Unmittelbar nördlich des Everglades National Park schließt sich die Big Cypress National Preserve an. Von der Schnellstraße (Highway 41), die hindurch führt, gibt es eine Abzweigung, die südlich im Bogen mitten durch die tiefen Sümpfe führt, die Loop Road. Sie ist nur im östlichen Teil asphaltiert, die Erdstraße im westlichen Teil ist bei Nässe sicherlich unangenehm zu fahren. Die Natur begegnet uns noch intensiver, als im Nationalpark. Alligatoren gedeihen hier offenkundig besonders gut. Schon nach ein paar hundert Metern sehen wir zwei sehr große Exemplare, gewissermaßen „im Vorgarten“ eines Wohnhauses. Danach zeigen sich immer wieder welche, im offenen Wasser, im Sumpf, an der Straße. Auch der Sumpf mit den Sumpfzypressen beeindruckt uns, und nicht zuletzt die Tiere darin: Schildkröten, verschiedene Reiher und weitere Vögel.
Immediately north of the Everglades National Park follows the Big Cypress National Preserve. From the motorway (Highway 41) that leads through it, there is a turn-off that curves southwards through the middle of the deep swamps, the Loop Road. It is only tarmac in the eastern section, the dirt road in the western section is certainly unpleasant to drive in wet conditions. We encounter nature even more intensively than in the national park. Alligators obviously thrive here. After just a few hundred metres, we see two very large specimens, „in the front garden“ of a house, so to speak. After that, there are always more, in the open water, in the swamp, along the road. We are also impressed by the swamp with the bald cypresses, and not least the animals in it: turtles, various herons and other birds.
