Der Grund für unsere Fahrt ins abgelegene St Bathans ist der Blue Lake. Der Herumkommer hat Fotos von diesem unglaublich blauen See gesehen und will ihn selbst in Augenschein nehmen. Auf den uns verfügbaren Karten war nicht genau auszumachen, wie weit weg von St Bathans der Blue Lake liegt und ob er möglicherweise garnicht ohne Weiteres erreichbar ist. Wir haben Glück, die weite Anfahrt hat sich gelohnt. Der See liegt unmittelbar am Ort, wir können beim See parken, es gibt Wanderwege um den See herum.
The reason for our trip to the remote St Bathans is the Blue Lake. The Aroundgetter has seen photos of this incredibly blue lake and wants to see it for himself. On the maps available to us, it was not clear how far away from St Bathans the Blue Lake is and if perhaps it is not easily accessible. We are lucky, the long journey was worthwhile. The lake is right at the village, we can park by the lake, there are trails around the lake.
Ein paar hundert Meter entfernt ist eine einfache, große DOC Campsite, auf der gerade ein Treffen einer neuseeländischen Camper-Vereinigung stattfindet. Daher sind sehr viele Motorhomes auf dem Platz, aber der ist trotzdem nicht voll. Einige der Camper sind neugierig auf unser Wohnmobil, das von Wilderness Motorhomes aus Deutschland importiert ist. Wir freuen uns, ihnen das Mobil von innen und außen vorführen zu dürfen. Und die Kiwis sind begeistert, manche der Einrichtungen und Funktionen haben sie noch nicht gesehen.
Noch am Abend unserer Ankunft müssen wir den See sehen. Und am nächsten Morgen nochmal, diesmal bei Sonnenschein. Wow, das ist großes Kino!
A few hundred meters away is a simple, large DOC Campsite currently hosting a meeting of a New Zealand camper association. Therefore, there are a lot of motorhomes on the field, but it is still not full. Some of the campers are curious about our motor home, which is imported from Germany by Wilderness Motorhomes. We are pleased to be able to show them the vehicle from inside and outside. And the Kiwis are excited, some of the facilities and features they have not yet seen.
On the very evening of our arrival we have to see the lake. And again the next morning, this time in sunshine. Wow, that’s great cinema!
Der See ist das Ergebnis des Goldschürfens. In den 1860er oder -70er Jahre wurde begonnen, hier einen 120 m hohen Hügel abzutragen. Dafür wurde u. A. mit Wasserkanonen das Erdreich weggespült. Aus dem Hügel war Anfang der 1930er Jahre ein etwa 60 m tiefes Loch geworden, aus dem mit Rohren Wasser und Erdreich gesaugt wurde. Dann wurde die Minentätigkeit eingestellt, weil die Ränder des Lochs zu nah an den Ort kamen und ihn gefährdeten. Grundwasser füllte das Loch und machte es zu dem See. Sein ungewöhnliches Blau wird von Mineralien im Seegrund verursacht und von den hellen Ufern kontrastiert.
The lake is the result of the gold mining. In the 1860s or 70s it was begun to remove a 120 m high hill here. For this, amongst others, with water cannons the soil was washed away. From the hill in the early 1930s had become a hole about 60 m deep, from which water and soil was sucked through pipes. Then the mining was stopped because the edges of the hole came too close to the village and endangered it. Groundwater filled the hole and made the lake. Its unusual blue is caused by minerals in the lake bottom and contrasted by the bright banks.
