Die Bay of Fundy mit ihrem extremen Tidenhub haben wir bisher im Wesentlichen vom Ufer aus gesehen und erlebt. Am Burntcoat Head in Nova Scotia haben wir die Gelegenheit, auf dem Meeresboden umher zu gehen. Ein Leuchtturm hat uns dort hin gelockt. Der ist nicht mehr aktiv und nur noch ein Museum, das im Herbst geschlossen ist.
Ungefähr 200 m vom Leuchtturm wurde ein Zugang in die Bucht geschaffen, mit in die Felsen gehauenen Treppen. Gegenüber ragt eine „Blumentopf-Insel“ (flower pot island) auf. Bei Niedrigwasser ist hier ein ausgedehntes Felsplateau begehbar, das kurz zuvor noch teilweise mehrere Meter unter dem Meer lag. Nicht nur die Felsen sind hier rostrot, auch das Meerwasser ist von Sedimenten so gefärbt.
So far, we have mainly seen and experienced the Bay of Fundy with its extreme tidal range from the shore. At Burntcoat Head in Nova Scotia, we have the opportunity to walk around on the seabed. We were lured there by a lighthouse. It is no longer active and is now just a museum, which is closed in autumn.
About 200 metres from the lighthouse, an entrance to the bay has been created with steps carved into the rocks. A ‘flower pot island’ rises up opposite. At low tide, an extensive rocky plateau is accessible here, which shortly before was still several metres under the sea in places. It is not only the rocks that are rust-red here, the seawater is also coloured this way by sediments.
