Die Ruinen der Klosterstadt Clonmacnoise, schön am Shannon River gelegen, gelten als kulturhistorischer Höhepunkt Irlands. Im 6. Jahrhundert wurde die Klosteranlage gegründet und entwickelte sich zu einem von drei religiösen Zentren des Landes. Aus ganz Europa sollen im Mittelalter Mönche hierher gepilgert sein.
Vom neuen Anleger für die Touristenboote und -schiffe haben wir eine gute Sicht auf die Ruinen. Dem Andrang mehrerer Busladungen von Besuchern entgehen wir so. Und dann haben wir noch das Glück, dass ein Weidegatter offen ist und wir nah heran kommen.
The ruins of the monastic town of Clonmacnoise, beautifully situated at the Shannon River, are considered a cultural and historical highlight of Ireland. The monastery complex was founded in the 6th century and developed into one of three religious centres in the country. Monks are said to have made pilgrimages here from all over Europe in the Middle Ages.
From the new jetty for the tourist boats and ships, we have a good view of the ruins. This way we avoid the rush of several busloads of visitors. And then we are lucky that a pasture gate is open and we can get close.
