Die fast baumlose, recht eintönige Prärie im südlichen Saskatchewan hat uns dieses Mal nicht inspiriert. Für Aktivitäten war es einfach zu warm. Einmal hat nachts ein durchziehendes Gewitter für Aufregung gesorgt, weil es uns an das Unwetter im Grasslands National Park erinnerte. Ein anders Mal hat sich die Hitze und Schwüle in einem heftigen Gewitter mit Starkregen entladen und am späten Nachmittag für die erhoffte Abkühlung gesorgt.
Die Wiedereinreise in die USA war, anders als die beiden Einreisen nach Alaska, ein unerfreuliches Erlebnis. Am Grenzübergang von North Portal, Saskatchewan, nach Portal, North Dakota, wurden einige Lebensmittel beanstandet. Während wir in einem Warteraum saßen, haben zwei Grenzbeamte unser Wohnmobil durchsucht und Eier (weil ungekocht), Paprika, Tomaten, Avocados und Knoblauch konfisziert. Das Gemüse war teilweise kanadische Importware aus den USA. Welche Gefahren von diesen Lebensmitteln angeblich ausgehen, ist uns unverständlich. Die Aktion war würdelos und erinnerte an Verhältnisse im europäischen Mittelalter.
Die Prärie in North Dakota mit schier endlos geraden Straßen stand der Eintönigkeit in Saskatchewan nicht nach. Und auch in Minnesota haben wir nichts nennenswertes erlebt, bis wir den Lake Superior erreicht haben.
In Duluth, am westlichen „Zipfel“ des Lake Superior und der Grenze zu Wisconsin, steht am Canal Park ein Leuchtturm, wie der Herumkommer recherchiert hat. Vor Ort gibt es eine Überraschung: Hier stehen drei Leuchttürme. Außerdem quert eine historische Hubbrücke, die ‚Aerial Lift Bridge‘, die Hafeneinfahrt, den Duluth Ship Canal. Es ist ein aktives Museumsstück und Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Immerhin kann die Brücke in etwa einer Minute auf ihre volle Höhe von gut 41 m angehoben werden.
The almost treeless, rather monotonous prairie in southern Saskatchewan did not inspire us this time. It was simply too warm for activities. On one occasion, a thunderstorm passing through at night caused a stir because it reminded us of the storm in Grasslands National Park. On another occasion, the heat and sultriness was released in a heavy thunderstorm with heavy rain, providing the hoped-for cooling in the late afternoon.
The re-entry into the USA was, unlike the two entries into Alaska, an unpleasant experience. At the border crossing from North Portal, Saskatchewan, to Portal, North Dakota, some foodstuffs were rejected. While we were sitting in a waiting room, two border officials searched our motorhome and confiscated eggs (because they were uncooked), peppers, tomatoes, avocados and garlic. Some of the vegetables were Canadian imports from the USA. We cannot understand what dangers these foods allegedly pose. The action was undignified and reminiscent of conditions in the European Middle Ages.
The prairie in North Dakota with its almost endless straight roads was not inferior to the monotony of Saskatchewan. And we didn’t experience anything worth mentioning in Minnesota either until we reached Lake Superior.
At Duluth, at the western ‘tip’ of Lake Superior and the border with Wisconsin, there is a lighthouse at Canal Park, as the Aroundgetter has researched. There is a surprise on site: there are three lighthouses here. In addition, a historic aerial lift bridge crosses the harbour entrance, the Duluth Ship Canal. It is an active museum piece and landmark of the city. After all, the bridge can be raised to its full height of a good 41 metres in about a minute.
