Ingatsu Moorpfad

Ingatsu bog path

Our first destination in Estonia is the Soomaa National Park (Soomaa rahvus park), east of Pärnu. On a boardwalk we first go through a very wet forest that is regularly in high water during the thow. The highest water levels in several years are marked on some trees. To get to the eight meter higher moor, we have to go up a flight of stairs. At the top of the bog level there is an observation tower.

The boardwalk leads around several ponds. The deep black water in it is not only drinkable. There are also bathing facilities in two places. Head jumps are not allowed. Finally we discover countless tiny specimens of sundew on the ground next to the path.

Kastna Tammed

There is a lookout tower a few meters away. A French motorhome is already here, that’s enough for the small space. So we will look for another pitch for the night. The second oak is easy to find from the tower. After a short hike along the field path between juniper bushes and wildflowers, I discover the third oak some distance away by a farm.

In the forest, by the sea

After the small pitch near the old oaks was already occupied, we found another particularly beautiful one: Near Matsi on the edge of the forest, a few meters from the Baltic Sea beach, so with shade and sea views. The beach alternates between sand and round stones of all sizes.

Danke Fuchs.

Photo session with fox

Oh, now we have disturbed the fox sneaking up on the harvested field. He runs away. Mrs. Roundgetter picks up her camera and calls: “Fox stop! I’ll take nice photos of you. ”He stops, looks at the photographer and opens his mouth. Unfortunately, the answer is incomprehensible from the distance. He shows himself from all sides. Then he sits down and waits. Thank you fox.

Muhu

english:

The three largest islands in Estonia are all in the north-west of the country. Muhu, the smallest of the three, can be reached the quickest from the mainland. The ferry from Virtsu to Kuivastu runs three times an hour in midsummer and takes barely an hour for the crossing; the tariffs are very cheap. Muhu is considered the most idyllic island: thatched-roof houses, many of which have been lavishly restored, and ancient stone walls covered in thick green moss create a romantic atmosphere.

english:

Üügu cliffs

In the north of the island of Muhu there is a hikers‘ car park at a special geological formation, which we like to use for an overnight stay. Üügu pank is a limestone cliff by the sea. It’s not very high, but it stretches across the Baltic Sea and also forms the north and west coast of the Swedish island of Gotland (where we saw the spectacular Raukar at sunset last year). Above the rock face lies an enchanting, barren limestone landscape with juniper bushes and particularly species-rich vegetation. It is an Alvar (as it is known e.g. from the Swedish island of Öland).

Evening at Üügu pank

Shortly after our arrival at Üügu pank, a shower passed over us. But then we are particularly lucky. The low setting sun illuminates the pretty landscape with a velvety soft light underneath the clouds. In addition, two cattle and a group of horses graze picturesquely in the plants on the beach in the water.

Gemäldeausstellung in Igaküla

Painting exhibition at Igaküla

The morning after we photographed Üügu pank in the warm evening light, a woman parks her car in the hikers‘ car park and walks to the cliffs with painting utensils. That is the impulse for the Aroundgetter to address the painter and give her photo cards with Hamburg shots from us with the blog address. Tiina is obviously happy and shows her work in progress. And then she invites us. She and a few other women have traveled to Muhu from Pärnu and are painting here. In the evening they exhibit their pictures and we are invited.

In the garden of an old, lovingly restored farmhouse at Igaküla, the painters exhibit their works and have invited the village.

english:

In the far north of Muhu, near Nõmmküla, there is a lighthouse according to our map. The road there turns into a very bad path with big potholes. And then we are in a large derilict land that is mostly overgrown with grass and wildflowers. A former quay is in ruins. The lighthouse belongs to the boring kind, rather a better sea mark. We have seen such a thing several times in all three Baltic countries. But this area is attractive due to the recapture by nature. We found our pitch for the night.

Daher stehen in Estland sehr viele Leuchttürme.

Estonia is a relatively small country, but it has a long coastline. Then there are the islands. Therefore there are a lot of lighthouses in Estonia. On Saaremaa, the largest island in Estonia, we drive on winding field and forest roads to the end of one of the island tips. The black and white lighthouse Kübassaare stands between ruins and an old well. The surrounding pastures at the Baltic Sea are strewn with boulders. A small bay in the reeds is used as a boat launch.

Koigi-See

english:

Lake Koigi

Around 40% of Estonia are forests, another 20% are swamps and lakes. Bogs therefore have something characteristic of the country. Usually they are inaccessible and therefore strange. They are also dangerous. On the island of Saaremaa we have another opportunity for a bog hike. Here the path leads around a large moor lake, the Koigi järv (Lake Koigi).

First we go through a wet forest on soft, springy ground. Here we have to fight off mosquitoes, flies and horseflies. Then the area opens up to the bog and the nuisances are considerably less. At first we walk on wooden planks, but the longest part of the way around the lake leads over steel plates that lie on old tires. It’s a bit of a shaky affair and requires concentration. When we have wooden planks under our feet again, we finally get to the lake. A little further along the way there is a lookout tower from which we can see the lake and the moor.

Pearl necklaces and other jewelry

In the early morning we hiked around the Koigi järv moor lake. Hence, we saw some adorable things in nature that were gone later in the day. The morning dew has created filigree droplet patterns on fennel as well as reed and grass leaves. And someone hung pearl necklaces in the sun.

Halbinsel Kahtla

Kahtla Peninsula

Again we drive on partly adventurous field and forest paths to the end of one of the corners of the Saaremaa island. On the way to the Laidunina lighthouse, we pass very simple dwellings and the beautiful coastline. The tower and its surroundings are worth seeing but ruins. The lighthouse was deactivated in 1924 and its lighting equipment was transferred to the Kübassaare lighthouse. It is meanwhile recognized as a cultural monument of Estonia.

Kuressaare Castle

Kuressaare is the only town on Saaremaa Island and its main town. The small town is pretty, with some lovely wooden houses in the old town. The impressive castle complex from the 14th century is outstanding. It is considered to be one of the most important architectural monuments in the entire Baltic region. A park-like green belt extends around the walls, moat and ramparts of the castle. At the old castle gate is the beautifully decorated wooden structure of the former spa house.

In the south, the island of Saaremaa narrows to the long peninsula of Sörve. On its west coast near Lõu there is a small lighthouse (Estonian: tuletorn) in the limestone cliffs. On the terrace level below, we have one of our most beautiful pitches ever. And then the sunset begins and lasts spectacularly for almost an hour and a half. Meanwhile the full moon rises next to the lighthouse.

Loode

english:

Where the Sörve peninsula protrudes furthest to the west, the Loode lighthouse (Loode tuletorn) is located. The short driveway is narrow and consists of potholes. The area on which the tower stands looks like a former military area, vehicle entry is prohibited. We park in the parking bay and the Aroundgetter continues on foot to take photos. The coast here consists of boulders and large pebbles. The lighthouse is actually quite inconspicuous, but its barren surroundings and a grandiose sky put it in the limelight.

Panga pank

english:

Sunset at Peraküla

North of Haapsalu, almost at the western end of the Estonian north coast near Peraküla, we have a pitch by the sea. Here is one of the free campsites of the Estonian forest management RMK at a beautiful beach. We have already used a few of these places. They are simple and primarily for tenting, but there is always space for motorhomes too. The infrastructure at these sites is also geared towards tents, with dry toilets, fire pits and grills. This space is very large and the area for mobile homes is relatively small. After all, it is big enough for six different sized motorhomes and a few cars from Estonia, Lithuania, Finland and Germany. In the evening we have another long sunset spectacle. With the very last bit of light over the sea, a couple of dramatic images succeed.

Kalkgrube Rummu

In Rummu the infamous Soviet prison Murru was located. Next to it was a lime quarry where the inmates had to work. The prison has been closed and some of the security systems have been preserved for posterity. The pit stopped operating and filled with water, which ruined some of the prison buildings. Because of the crystal clear, turquoise shimmering water, the lake is popular for swimming, but also for diving. Young people use the ruins as a diving platform.
