Europe’s desert

Once again we drove from the sea to the inland, into the desert. North of Almería is the supposedly only desert in Europe, the Desierto de Tabernas (a semi-desert according to official criteria). The Sierra Nevada in the west and more of the many Spanish sierras in the north and south-southeast keep clouds away and allow little precipitation. The area is dominated by canyons, which were washed out by the rare rains for a long time. At the bottom of some of these gorges we see comparatively lush vegetation. In fact, it rained the day before and we experience the desert with clouds.

Even before we reach Tabernas, we came across „gold“. The oil mill ‚Oro del Desierto‚ (Gold of the Desert) produces exclusively organic olive oil. Four of the many varieties of olives are suitable for growing in the desert. Organic agriculture is favored by the fact that there are hardly any animal pests. The tasting of the different oils, similar to a wine tasting, is a great pleasure for us. And then a supply for the campers garlic kitchen is stocked. We were told it can be ordered via the Internet. Shipping is possible to all over Europe, the transport costs are low.
