In der Provinz Mendoza haben wir unsere Reiseroute mal wieder geändert und uns zunächst von den Anden verabschiedet. Von San Rafael aus sind wir in mehreren Tagesetappen quer durch die Pampa gefahren, bis an den Südatlantik. Mit dem Überqueren des Rio Colorado auf der Ruta Nacional 3 (RN 3) haben wir Patagonien erreicht. Unser Ziel ist El Cóndor in der Provinz Rio Negro.
Als wir dort gegen Abend ankommen, sind die Freileitungen beim Leuchtturm dicht besetzt mit Vögeln. Aber es sind keine Stare, wie wir es aus Europa kennen, sondern Papageienvögel. Die weltgrößte Kolonie von Felsensittichen befindet sich hier in der bis zu 40 Meter hohen Steilwand am Meer. Auf einer Länge von zwölf Kilometern haben die Vögel ungefähr 35.000 Nist- und Wohnhöhlen bis zu drei Meter tief in den Sandstein gegraben. Die farbenfrohen Sittiche können bis zu 40 cm groß werden.
Rock parakeets
In the province of Mendoza, we changed our route again and said goodbye to the Andes for now. From San Rafael, we drove across the pampas in several daily stages until we reached the South Atlantic. Crossing the Rio Colorado on the Ruta Nacional 3 (RN 3), we reached Patagonia. Our destination is El Cóndor in the province of Rio Negro.
When we arrive there in the evening, the overhead cables near the lighthouse are densely populated with birds. But they are not starlings as we know them from Europe, but parrot birds. The world’s largest colony of rock parakeets can be found here in the up to 40-metre-high cliff face by the sea. Over a length of twelve kilometres, the birds have dug about 35,000 nesting and living cavities up to three metres deep into the sandstone. The colourful parakeets can grow up to 40 cm.
