Daugavpils, die zweitgrößte Stadt Lettlands, bildet als Industriestadt mit Plattenbausiedlungen einen krassen Kontrast zur eher lieblichen Landschaft der Region Latgale. Außerhalb des Stadtzentrums steht die riesige sternförmige Festung Dünaburg (Dinaburgas cietoksnis). Es handelt sich dabei um eine militärische Stadt, Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts vom zaristischen Russland gebaut. Restaurierungsarbeiten sind im Gange. Insbesondere das Mark-Rothko-Kunstzentrum ist schon fertig gestellt (der Maler wurde in Daugavpils geboren und verbrachte seine ersten zehn Lebensjahre in der Stadt).
Dünaburg fortress Daugavpils, the second largest city in Latvia, as an industrial city with prefabricated housing estates, forms a stark contrast to the rather lovely landscape of the Latgale region. Outside the city center stands the huge star-shaped fortress of Daugavpils (Dinaburgas cietoksnis). It is a military city, built by Tsarist Russia in the early 19th century. Restoration work is in progress. In particular, the Mark Rothko Art Center has already been completed (the painter was born in Daugavpils and spent the first ten years of his life in the city).
