This is the entire blog of our summer tour of Finland Vom Ylläs bei Äkästompolo am Rand des Pallas-Yllästunturin Nationalpark haben wir einen herrlichen Blick über die Wälder Lapplands. Der Rastplatz liegt wildromantisch zwischen knorrigen Bäumen.
Ski school From the Ylläs at Äkästompolo on the edge of the Pallas-Yllästunturin national park we have a wonderful view over the forests of Lapland. The rest area lies wildly romantic between gnarled trees.
Der Gipfel des Ylläs selbst ist eine kahle Kuppe mit Geröll an einigen Hängen. Die meisten Hänge sind mit Ski-Liften und -Abfahrten gepflastert. Hier ist die längste Abfahrtspiste Finnlands. Da dürfen Details nicht an der Ausübung des Sports hindern, wie z.B. kein Schnee oder hochsommerliche Temperaturen. Skilanglauf wird durchgezogen.
The summit of the Ylläs itself is a bare dome with rubble on some slopes. Most slopes are paved with ski lifts and downhills. Here is the longest slope for downhill skiing in Finland. Therefore details must not hinder the exercise of sport, e.g. no snow or high summer temperatures. Cross-country skiing is carried through.
So viel Enthusiasmus steckt an. Die Typen aus der Gegend finden sich schon bei der Ski-Schule ein und warten auf ihren Skilehrer.
That much enthusiasm infects. The local guys are already arriving at the ski school waiting for their ski instructor.
Ein paar Kilometer nördlich von Äkästompolo steht mitten im Wald eine unscheinbare alte Wassermühle, die Äkäsmylly. Hier machen wir eine Wanderung, über die Holzbrücke an der Mühle und in den Wald hinein. Der Nadelwald und die Felsen sind von der Julisonne aufgeheizt und es ist schwül. Daher wird es nur eine kurze Wanderung.
A few kilometers north of Äkästompolo stands an inconspicuous old water mill, the Äkäsmylly, in the middle of the forest. Here we make a hike, over the wooden bridge at the mill and into the forest. The coniferous forest and the rocks are heated by the July sun and it is sultry. Therefore, it is only a short hike.
Bei Muonio und weiter nordöstlich am Muotkajärvi bei Hetta / Enontekiö sind wir endgültig in den lappländischen Sommer eingetaucht. Ende Juli scheint die Sonne hier immer noch fast rund um die Uhr. Mit Temperaturen bis zu 24°C ist es sehr sommerlich. Allerdings bei Windstille nerven Mücken, Bremsen und Fliegen. Die Rentiere gehen ihrer liebsten Beschäftigung nach: Auf der Mittellinie der Landstraße entlang latschen.
Lapland summer Near Muonio and further north-east at the Muotkajärvi near Hetta / Enontekio, we are finally immersed in the Lapland summer. At the end of July, the sun still shines almost around the clock. With temperatures up to 24°C it is very summery. However, during windstills mosquitoes, gadflies and flies nerve. The reindeer go after their favorite activity: taipse along the central line along the country road.
In die Berge des Pallas Yllästunturi Nationalparks kommen wir nicht. Aber eine Landstraße führt im Nordosten am Park entlang und streckenweise hindurch. Borealer Wald und Feuchtgebiete, breite, schnell fließende Flüsse und Seen prägen das Bild der Landschaft.
Pallas Yllästunturi National Park Into the mountains of the Pallas Yllästunturi National Park we do not make it. But a country road leads in the northeast along the park and stretches through. Boreal forest and wetlands, broad, fast flowing rivers and lakes characterize the landscape.
Für Schneemobile gibt es, nicht nur hier, ein ausgedehntes Netz von Routen durch Gebiete, die nur bei Frost erreichbar sind. Sie haben eine eigene Beschilderung.
For snow mobiles there is, not only here, an extensive network of routes through areas that are only accessible during frost. They have their own signposting. Bei Sirkka ragt der Berg Levi aus der Ebene empor. Angesichts seiner Lage ist er zwangsläufig ein Wintersort-Hotspot. Wir wollen die hoch gelobte Fernsicht vom Gipfel erleben. Zu unserer Überraschung findet dort gerade ein Sportereignis statt. Auf der Ski-Abfahrt läuft ein Downhill-Rennen.
Down At Sirkka the mountain Levi rises from the plain. In view of its location, it is inevitably a winter sport hotspot. We want to experience the highly praised far-sightedness of the summit. To our surprise there is just a sports event. On the ski downhill runs a bike downhill race. Bei Luosto treffen wir auf den diesjährigen Betriebsausflug von Rudolph GmbH. Vermutlich war das Buffet üppig, denn alle Teilnehmer sind etwas schlapp. Einige stehen noch an wegen Eiscreme. Die Auszubildenden haben sich einfach auf den Boden gelegt, da wird ihr Ausbilder ärgerlich. In seinem weißen Anzug fällt der Prokurist besonders auf.
Company outing Near Luosto, we meet Rudolph Ltd at this year’s company outing. Probably the buffet was sumptuous, because all participants are a bit weak. Some are still queueing for ice cream. The apprentices have simply laid themselves on the ground, their instructors becomes annoying. In his white suit, the general manager is particularly standing out. . Nördlich von Kemijärvi dehnt sich der Fluss Kemijoki aus wie ein See. An seinem Ufer und an den Zuflüssen dreht der Lapplandsommer richtig auf. Obligatorisch an jedem Rastplatz in Finnland ist ein voll ausgestatteter Grillplatz, am Besten mit Dach.
North of Kemijärvi the river Kemijoki stretches like a lake. On its banks and the tributaries, the Lapland summer is really going on. Compulsory at each rest area in Finland is a fully equipped barbecue, best with roof. . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . Die nördlichste Stadt Finnlands, Kemijärvi, liegt hübsch eingebettet zwischen mehreren Ausläufern des Sees Kemijärvi. Ein paar Kilometer östlich lockt uns ein Straßenschild zu einem Aussichtspunkt. Über eine Schotterstraße und eine Steigung fahren wir zu einem Parkplatz, von dem aus die Ersteigung einer Anhöhe startet. Auf halber Strecke nach oben hängen Nordic Walking- und Ski- Stöcke zur Verfügung. Wir schaffen es ohne sie bis zum Gipfel. Dort steht ein Aussichtsturm, von dem wir über den Wald hinweg blicken können. Finnen lieben diese Türme, es gibt sie praktisch überall in Finnland, mal aus Holz, mal aus Metallgitter, mal aus Beton.
Beautiful view The northernmost city of Finland, Kemijärvi, is nicely nestled between several extensions of the lake Kemijärvi. A few kilometers to the east, a road sign attracts us to a viewpoint. Via a gravel road and a gradient, we drive to a parking lot from which the ascent of a hill starts. Half-way up, Nordic walking and skiing poles are hanging for free availability. We can do it without them to the summit. There is a view tower from which we can look over the forest. Finns love these towers, they are practically everywhere in Finland, sometimes in wood, sometimes in metal matrix, sometimes in concrete. Etwa 40 km südöstlich von Kemijärvi, am Abzweig nach Raisälä steht an der Straße Nr. 5 eine große Statue aus Metall, die den Polarkreis symbolisiert. In der Umgebung ist die Landschaft traumhaft idyllisch.
Arctic Circle, again About 40 km south-east of Kemijärvi, at the junction to Raisälä stands a large statue of metal at road no. 5, symbolizing the Arctic Circle. In the surrounding area the landscape is dreamlike idyllic.
An der Landenge Mourusalmi, östlich von Posio, essen wir am Abend draußen, direkt am See.
Meal At the isthmus Mourusalmi, east of Posio, we eat outside in the evening, directly at the lake.
Die offiziell ausgewiesenen Stellplätze für Wohnmobile und Wohnwagen sind in der Nähe schön im Wald verteilt. Am Morgen, nachdem es zu regnen aufgehört hat, haben wir seltenen Besuch. Eine kleine Herde Rentiere ist direkt gegenüber zum Äsen gekommen. Als der Herumkommer sie fotografieren will, laufen sie weg, aber nicht weit. So kann er sie beim Fressen beobachten.
Meal The officially designated pitches for campers and caravans are located in the forest in the vicinity. In the morning, after it stopped raining, we have rare visitors. A small herd of reindeer has come directly opposite to browse. When the Aroundgetter wants to photograph them, they run away, but not far. So he can observe them eating. Nach einer Woche haben wir Lappland nach Südosten verlassen. Zwischen Peranka und Suomussalmi kommen wir zu einem anrührenden Kunstwerk: Auf einer Moorwiese an der Straße Nr. 5 steht das Stille Volk, ungefähr 1.000 lebensgroße Figuren. Sie bestehen jeweils aus einem Holzkreuz mit Kleidung und einem Kopf aus Grassoden. Geschaffen hat dieses nachhaltig beeindruckende Werk der finnische Künstler, Tänzer und Choreograph Reijo Kela.
Quiet People After a week we have left Lapland to the southeast. Between Peranka and Suomussalmi we come to a touching work of art: on a moor meadow at the road No. 5 stands the Quiet People, about 1,000 life-size figures. They each consist of a wooden cross with clothes and a head of sod. The Finnish artist, dancer and choreographer Reijo Kela has created this lasting impressive work. . Nördlich von Suomussalmi führt ein Damm durch den See Kovajärvi. Hier haben wir einen sehr schönen Stellplatz im Wald mit Seeblick. Am Abend spiegelt sich ein dramatischer Himmel im See. Ab 22 Uhr steht das östliche Seeufer im Abendrot wie in Flammen.
North of Suomussalmi, a dam leads through the lake Kovajärvi. Here we have a very nice pitch in the forest with lake view. In the evening, a dramatic sky is reflected in the lake. From 10 pm the eastern shore of the lake is like in flames from the afterglow.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 800 bis 900 Bären leben derzeit in Finnland, steht im Dumont Reiseführer. “Dabei gibt es Braunbären vereinzelt in allen Provinzen, außer in Åland. Die größte Konzentration aller europäischen Braunbären hält sich in der finnischen Wildnis auf, und zwar zwischen Kuhmo, Kajaani und der russischen Grenze.“ Seit wir in Alaska Grizzlies aus nächster Nähe beobachtet haben, faszinieren uns Bären. Sie wirken auf den ersten Blick plump, sind aber erstaunlich agil und sehr schnelle „Fußgänger“. Wir versuchen spontan unser Glück und können tatsächlich früh morgens vor Ort bei „Wild Brown Bear“ nahe Vartius an der russischen Grenze die Bärenbeobachtung für die folgende Nacht buchen. Um 17 Uhr geht es los. Zusammen mit einem Guide und dreizehn weiteren Personen wandern wir ungefähr 800 m durch Wald und Moor zu einem Teich. Dort gibt es für jeweils zwei Personen ein kleines Versteck. Es ist ausgestattet mit Sehschlitzen, Fotoöffnungen sowie dem Nötigsten für die Nacht. Denn vor 7 Uhr am folgenden Morgen dürfen die Verstecke nicht verlassen werden. Nach gut eineinhalb Stunden zeigt sich der erste Bär, ein kräftiges Tier mit dunklem Fell. Krähen und Möwen versuchen, ihm einen Teil seiner Beute abzujagen. Weitere zweieinhalb Stunden dauert es, bis wir den nächsten Bären vor uns haben. Er ist etwas kleiner, heller und sieht „kuscheliger“ aus. Insgesamt sehen wir bis etwa 21:30 Uhr sechsmal einzelne Bären, einige in größerer Entfernung.
Bear and wolverine 800 to 900 bears are currently living in Finland, says the Dumont travel guide. „There are brown bears in all provinces, except in Åland. The largest concentration of all European brown bears is found in the Finnish wilderness, between Kuhmo, Kajaani and the Russian border.“ Since we have observed Grizzlies in Alaska in close proximity, bears fascinate us. They look clumsy at first sight, but are surprisingly agile and very fast „pedestrians“. We try spontaneously our luck and can actually book early in the morning at „Wild Brown Bear“ near Vartius on the Russian border the bear observation for the following night. At 5 pm it starts. Together with a guide and thirteen other people we walk about 800 m through forest and moor to a pond. There are small hides for two people each. They are equipped with observation slits, photo openings as well as the most necessary for the night. Because the hides must not be left before 7 am the following morning. After about one and a half hours the first bear shows up, a strong animal with a dark coat. Crows and gulls try to chase some of its booty. It takes another two and a half hours before we have the next bear in front of us. It is slightly smaller, brighter and looks more „cuddly“. Altogether six times we see single bears, some at a far distance, until about 9:30 pm.
Nur wenig später folgt die eigentliche Sensation: Auf etwa 150 Exemplare wird die finnische Population der extrem scheuen Vielfraße geschätzt. Und hier läuft einer durch die Feuchtwiese. Er läuft so schnell und elegant, dass es wirkt, als ob er fliegt.
Only a little later the actual sensation follows: on about 150 specimen, the Finnish population is estimated of the extremely shy wolverines. And here one runs through the marsh area. It runs so fast and elegant that it appears as if it flies. . Nachdem wir die Bärenbeobachtung gebucht haben und noch bis zum Abend warten müssen, sind wir zum Lentuankoski gefahren. Stromschnellen sind “koski”. Hier, nordöstlich von Kuhmo, läuft mal wieder ein See in einen anderen über, und zwar heftig. Wie ein Kanal sind die Stromschnellen ausgebaut, mit einem Holzbohlensteg an einer Seite. Angler tummeln sich hier.
After we have booked the bear observation and have to wait until the evening, we drove to Lentuankoski. Rapids are „koski“. Here, north-east of Kuhmo, once again a lake flows over into another, and indeed violently. Like a canal the rapids are finished, with a wooden plank at one side. Anglers scrimmage here. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Im Koli Nationalpark am südöstlchen Ufer des Sees Pielinen suchen wir die Zufahrt zum Gipfel Ukko-Koli. Auf dem Schotterweg im Hochwald ohne brauchbare Wegweisung finden wir sie nicht. Stattdessen taucht der See Jero neben uns auf, mit Wolken, die als Nebel tief im Wald hängen und sich im Wasser spiegeln.
Koli National Park In Koli National Park, on the south-eastern bank of the lake Pielinen, we look for the access to the summit Ukko-Koli. On the gravel road in the high forest without usable signposting we do not find them. Instead, the lake Jero emerges next to us, with clouds that hang as fog deep in the forest and reflect in the water. Wald, Wald und nochmal Wald. Das Grün der schier endlosen Wälder ist sicherlich unser überragender Eindruck von Finnland. In Karelien, im Osten Finnlands, kommt noch eine besondere Variante hinzu: Birkenwälder. Nicht einzelne Birken zwischen anderen Laub- oder Nadelbäumen, sondern ganze Wälder von Birken. Sie leuchten hell und oft ist ihr Boden von weißen Wildblumen bedeckt. Weil sie nicht so dicht wie andere Wälder sind, kann man weit hinein und manchmal ganz hindurch sehen.
Birch forests Forest, forest and again forest. The green of the seemingly endless forests is certainly our outstanding impression of Finland. In Karelia, in the east of Finland, there is a special variant: birch forests. Not single birches between other foliage or coniferous trees, but entire forests of birch trees. They shine brightly and often their ground is covered by white wildflowers. Because they are not as dense as other forests, one can see far into and sometimes through. In Rantasalmi hat der Womo-Führer einen Stellplatz im Park verzeichnet. Ihn schmücken besonders schöne, große Birken. Bei einem Spaziergang durch den Park sind wir freudig überrascht: In vielen der Bäume hängen Starenkästen und einige sind liebevoll bunt bemalt, vermutlich von Kindern.
At Rantasalmi, the camper guide has listed a pitch in the park. Beautiful, large birches adorn it. During a walk through the park, we are joyfully surprised: in many of the trees hang starling’s nest boxes and some are lovingly painted, probably by children.
Und dann sehen wir etwas im Detail, das wir schon in anderen finnischen Städten gesehen haben: Über den gesamten Park erstreckt sich ein Disk- bzw. Frisbee-Golf-Parcours. Die Abwürfe (statt Abschläge) sind rechteckige, weiße Flächen. Daneben steht ein Schild mit Angaben über die jeweilige Bahn. Statt eines Lochs gibt es einen speziellen Korb aus Ketten. Während unseres Spaziergangs bespielt eine Gruppe von fünf jungen Männern den Parcours. Als zwei Frisbee-Scheiben im See landen, zieht einer sich aus und holt sie schwimmend heraus, bei 16° C Lufttemperatur.
And then we see something in detail that we have already seen in other Finnish cities: a Disc or Frisbee Golf course stretches over the entire park. The lauches (instead of tees) are rectangular, white surfaces. Next to it is a sign with information about the respective course. Instead of a hole, there is a special basket of chains. During our walk a group of five young men play the course. When two frisbee discs land in the lake, undresses and takes them out swimming, at 16° C air temperature.
. Finnland feiert 100 Jahre Eigenständigkeit als Staat. Bis 1917 war es wechselweise schwedisch oder russisch. Die beiden Großmächte haben immer wieder um und in Finnland Krieg geführt. Von den Burgen, die die Einen errichteten und die Anderen zerstörten sind nur sehr wenige erhalten. Die stattlichste, die Olavinlinna, steht in Savonlinna und kontrollierte dort eine Engstelle zweier großer Seen. Der Ort ist einladend und im Sommer fahren Fahrgastschiffe auf den Pihlajavesi hinaus.
Finland is celebrating 100 years of independence as a state. Until 1917 it was alternatively Swedish or Russian. The two great powers have always fought wars about and in Finland. Of the fortresses that one built and the other destroyed only a very few have been preserved. The most imposing one, the Olavinlinna, stands at Savonlinna, where it controlled a narrow spot of two great lakes. The place is inviting and in the summer passenger ships go out on the Pihlajavesi. . . . . . . . . . . . .
Südöstlich von Savonlinna trennt der wenige Kilometer lange und stellenweise nur straßenbreite Höhenrücken Punkaharju die großen Seen Puruvesi und Pihlajavesi. Bei strahlendem Sonnenschein am Abend läuft der Finnlandsommer hier zu Höchstform auf.
