Vom Westen der Nordinsel beim Cape Egmont sind wir bis in den Südosten gefahren. Wir wollen den Leuchtturm sehen, der bei Castlepoint äußerst spektakulär auf einem Felsen thront.

From the west of the North Island at Cape Egmont we drove to the southeast. We want to see the lighthouse, which towers spectacularly on a rock at Castlepoint.

Während wir noch rätseln, was es damit auf sich hat, nähert sich in der geschützten kleinen Bucht ein Jetboat mit Aluminium-Rumpf. Jetboats sind eine neuseeländische Erfindung: Anstelle einer Schiffsschraube haben sie eine schwenkbare Düse (engl. jet), durch die mit hohem Druck Wasser gepumpt wird. Damit sind die Boote sehr schnell und wendig.
While we’re still wondering what it’s all about, a jetboat with aluminum hull approaches in the sheltered cove. Jetboats are a New Zealand invention: Instead of a propeller, they have a swivel nozzle (jet) through which water is pumped at high pressure. This makes the boats very fast and agile.
An einem Ufer der Bucht setzt das Boot einen Mann ab. Der besteigt eines der bizarren Fahrzeuge, wendet es und fährt damit rückwärts in das Wasser der Bucht.

Als das Amphibienfahrzeug tief genug im Wasser ist, fährt das Jetboat, das einen geringen Tiefgang hat, in dessen rückwärtiges Gestell. Mit dem Boot fährt es vorwärts in Richtung Land. Der Bootsführer gibt Gas und unterstützt damit den Vortrieb. Schließlich wird die Fahrzeugkombination in sicherem Abstand vom Meer geparkt und der Fang entladen. Ein pragmatisches Konzept für Fischer, deren Ort herrliche Strände hat, aber keine Möglichkeit für einen Hafen.
When the amphibious vehicle is deep enough in the water, the jetboat, which has a shallow draft, moves into its rear frame. With the boat, it drives forward towards land. The boatman accelerates and thus supports the propulsion. Finally, the vehicle combination is parked at a safe distance from the sea and the catch is unloaded.
