In Carmacks frischen wir unsere Vorräte auf. Auf dem Yukon starten zwei Kanadier-Boote mit der Strömung.
Dann fahren wir weiter den Klondike Highway (Hwy 2), der hier neben dem Yukon River verläuft, nach Norden. Etwa 20 km flussabwärts von Carmacks liegen die Stromschnellen Five Finger Rapids. Ursprünglich standen hier vier Felssäulen im Fluss und teilten ihn in fünf Finger.

Then we continue the Klondike Highway (Hwy 2), which runs along the Yukon River, to the north. About 20 km downstream from Carmacks are the Five Finger Rapids. Originally there were four rock columns in the river and divided it into five fingers.
Über eine sehr lange Treppe vom Parkplatz hinunter und ein paar Hundert Meter Wanderweg durch den Wald gelangen wir zu den Felsklippen.
Via very long stairs down from the parking lot and a few hundred meters of hiking trails through the forest we reach the cliffs.
Während des Klondike-Goldrausches Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, als der Yukon die wichtigste Verkehrsader war, sollen sich hier viele Dramen abgespielt haben. Mittlerweile wurde eine der Säulen gesprengt und so die Gefahr für Boote und Schiffe entschärft.
Nach wie vor ist der Yukon bei Wasserwanderern beliebt. Die Five Finger Rapids sind dabei eine gern genommene Herausforderung. Und siehe da, die Kanadier aus Carmacks sind auch schon da.
During the Klondike gold rush at the end of the 19th century, when the Yukon was the most important traffic artery, many dramas happened here. Meanwhile, one of the pillars was blown up, thus disarming the danger for boats and ships.
As before, the Yukon is popular with water hikers. The Five Finger Rapids are a very popular challenge. And guess what, the canoes from Carmacks are already here.
