Rund 400 km wollen wir an diesem Tag bewältigen, von 2.440 m Höhe über zwei hohe Andenpässe, nach Argentinien und wieder auf rund 2.100 m. Dafür sind wir schon in der Morgendämmerung auf der Ruta 27 in Richtung Osten. Von San Pedro de Atacama geht es zügig bergauf. Die Straße ist gut ausgebaut. Das Verkehrsaufkommen ist noch sehr überschaubar, wir kommen gut voran. Nach etwa 45 km ist auf etwa 4.000 m der Altiplano erreicht. Und es geht noch höher. Nach 1 1/2 Stunde sind wir auf der Passhöhe von 4.825 m, dem höchsten Punkt der Route und unserer Südamerika-Reise.
Breakfast on the Altiplano
Around 400 km we want to cover on this day, from an altitude of 2,440 m over two high Andean passes, into Argentina and back up to around 2,100 m again. For this, we are already on the Ruta 27 heading east at dawn. From San Pedro de Atacama, the road climbs quickly. The road is well built. The traffic volume is still very manageable, we make good progress. After about 45 km we reach the Altiplano at about 4,000 m. And it goes even higher. After 1 1/2 hours we are at the pass of 4,825 m, the highest point of the route and our South America trip.

In einer Lagune der Quebrada Quepiaco gründeln Flamingos. Im Gras des Feuchtgebiets ist noch Raureif vom Frost in der Hochgebirgs-Nacht. Und dann haben wir am Rand einer von Lavabrocken übersäten Ebene einen Platz fürs Frühstück.
