Was Gorafe berühmt macht, ist seine Wüste: desierto de Gorafe. Sie wird auch als Grand Canyon Andalusiens und sogar als Europas Grand Canyon bezeichnet. Auch mit Canayonlands wird sie verglichen. Das ist nicht völlig falsch aber die Dimensionen sind hier erheblich kleiner. Der Begriff „Badlands“ ist absolut zutreffend.
Wo die ebene Schotterstraße oberhalb Gorafe endet, beginnt eine Erdstraße in diese Wüste hinein. Zwar stehen in einzelnen Senken noch Pfützen aber weitgehend ist der „Weg“ trocken. Darum wagen wir die Fahrt hinab in die Badlands. In unserem Womo mit dem hohen Dach und dem Bett darin liegt der Schwerpunkt sehr hoch, es ist kein Geländefahrzeug. Aber mit Allradantrieb und Getriebeuntersetzung gelingt die Fahrt acht Kilometer hinein und wieder zurück. Es ist eine der schwierigsten Routen, die wir bisher mit dem Fahrzeug geschafft haben, das dabei an seine fahrtechnischen Grenzen gerät.
Gorafe Desert
What makes Gorafe famous is its desert: desierto de Gorafe. It is also known as the Grand Canyon of Andalusia and even the Grand Canyon of Europe. It is also compared to Canyonlands. This is not entirely incorrect, but the dimensions here are considerably smaller. The term ‘badlands’ is absolutely accurate.
Where the flat gravel road above Gorafe ends, a dirt road begins into this desert. Although there are still puddles in some of the hollows, the ‘way’ is largely dry. So we venture down into the badlands. In our motorhome with its high roof and the bed in it, the centre of gravity is very high; it is not an off-road vehicle. But with four-wheel drive and reduction gear, we manage to drive eight kilometres in and back again. It is one of the most difficult routes we have ever managed with this vehicle, which is pushed to its driving limits.
