Laut unserem Reiseführer „gehört Iquique zweifellos zu den schönsten Städten Chiles“. An der Front zum Pazifik mit schönen Stränden für Jedermann, Strandpromenade und den repräsentativen Gebäude dahinter stimmen wir zu. Das Häusermeer hinter der hübschen „Fassade“ in einer der schönsten Städte des Landes lässt nur ein wenig ahnen, welche unattraktiven Städte und Dörfer wir in Chile gesehen haben (um es freundlich zu formulieren). Besonders ist Iquique allemal. Es liegt zwischen dem Pazifik und der direkt hinter der Stadt aufragenden über 600 m hohen Wand der Kordillere. Insbesondere auf der Weiterfahrt ins Landesinnere, auf die Kordillere hinauf, kann man sehr gut die mehrere Hundert Meter hohe und vier Kilometer lange Sanddüne sehen, die die Stadt im Süden zusätzlich begrenzt. Wegen ihrer Form wird sie El Cerro Dragón (Der Drachenhügel) genannt.

Facing the Pacific Ocean with beautiful beaches for everyone, a beach promenade and the prestigious buildings behind it, we agree. The sea of houses behind the pretty „façade“ in one of the country’s most beautiful cities only gives a little idea of the unattractive towns and villages we have seen in Chile (to put it kindly). Iquique is definitely special. It lies between the Pacific Ocean and the more than 600-metre-high Cordillera wall that rises directly behind the city. Especially on the way inland, up the Cordillera, you can easily see the sand dune, several hundred metres high and four kilometres long, which additionally borders the city in the south. Because of its shape, it is called El Cerro Dragón (The Dragon’s Hill).
