Größere Kontraste sind kaum vorstellbar, als die Landschaften der Isle of Lewis and Harris, die nördlichste der äußeren Hebriden. Die Insel hat zwei Namen, angeblich weil das massive Gebirge zwischen beiden Teilen, Lewis im Norden, das kleinere Harris im Süden, sie früher für die Menschen so trennte, dass sie den jeweiligen Teil als eigenständige Insel wahrnahmen. Kontraste und krasse Gegensätze sind aber auf beiden Inselteilen prägnant. Der Reiseführer formuliert es treffend: „Landschaft pur“.
Von Uig im Norden der Isle of Skye hat uns die Fähre nach Tarbert auf Harris gebracht. Von dort aus haben wir zunächst die viel größere Landfläche von Lewis bereist: Endlose Moorflächen, herrliche Strände zwischen Felsklippen, bergige Stein- und Moor-Wüsten.
Greater contrasts are hard to imagine than the landscapes of the Isle of Lewis and Harris, the northernmost of the outer Hebrides. The island has two names, supposedly because the massive mountains between the two parts, Lewis in the north, the smaller Harris in the south, used to separate for the people so that they perceived the respective part as an independent island. But contrasts and stark difference are concise on both parts of the island. The travel guide puts it aptly: „pure landscape“.
From Uig in the north of the Isle of Skye the ferry to Tarbert brought us to Harris. From there, we first traveled the much larger land area of Lewis: endless moorland, magnificent beaches between rocky cliffs, mountainous stone and moor deserts.
