Bait

In the west of Ontario, from Kenora via Fort Frances to Thunder Bay, we drive for several hundred kilometers predominantly through wooded rock and lake landscape. We had not expected so much wilderness so far south. Once again a bear is standing at the street. This one points to a dangerous bend.

West of Atikokan in the late afternoon we find another pitch at a particularly idyllic lake. We are still enjoying the priceless view, as two young women come in their car with a canoe. With a few practiced hand movements, the boat is unloaded and brought to the water. But this is not about after-work relaxation on the lake. The two paddle here and there, to this shore and to that, then in the middle of the lake. And they are quite active, but we can not see what they are doing there. When dawn breaks, they land again. On our curious question, they willingly show us their catch in the red bucket: they are bait fish. On signs by the road we read that they are being advertised for sale. Obviously they are very much in demand. The two young women skillfully pack their canoe back on their car, fasten it expertly and drive away with their catch.

Kakabeka Falls

About 30 km west of Thunder Bay, the Kakabeka Falls fall about 40 m into a gorge. The sun is already quite low on the horizon, as we arrive there. Above the falls there are very comfortable boardwalks. Unfortunately, the waterfall is so overgrown that it can not be fully seen anywhere.

Ouimet Canyon

In the vicinity of Dorion between Thunder Bay and Nipigon lies a bit hidden in the mountains a geological sensation: The Ouimet Canyon. Very comfortable boardwalks make it even wheelchair accessible. From two platforms we can look into the throat. Another special feature is the flora at the bottom of the canyon. Here a community of plants settles, which otherwise grows only in subarctic areas a thousand kilometers north. Although the sky is gray, the somewhat difficult ride here over considerable gradients has paid off.

Terrace Bay

Near Terrace Bay, the Aguasabon River crashes spectacularly into a ravine. A few hundred meters further, it flows picturesque as cascades into a lagoon. The beach car park between the lagoon and the large water is ours for one night. In the morning a storm rages. The sea is racing. However, it is not a sea, but the largest freshwater lake in the world in terms of area: Lake Superior.

Halloween

english:

In Canada, Halloween is not just a one-day event, and certainly not just for kids. Halloween parties are announced everywhere. And for weeks, house entrances have been decorated with at least a few pumpkins. In many front gardens, in windows, even in public places, the most creepy and frightening things are decorated. Sometimes, however, the decoration tends to be cheerful.

Kieselstrand

Pebble Beach

Near Marathon, 75 kilometers east of Terrace Bay, Lake Superior has a beach of extra large, rounded pebbles: Pebble Beach. As is the case with virtually any Canadian waters, much driftwood is washed ashore. The colorful pebbles shine wet from the surf. The combination of pebbles and old wood gives imaginative pictures.

Bridal Veil Falls

In Lake Huron lies the largest freshwater island: Manitoulin Island. From the northeast, it is accessible via a bridge from the mainland. It is a charming island, but we have autumnal weather with mostly gray skies. In this light just a few useful lighthouse photos succeed. In Kagawong we are attracted by the Bridal Veil Falls, however. They „suffer“ a little from lack of water and thus appear very delicate.

On Manitoulin Island, the weather is still modest and so the cranes have every reason to travel south. They take a rest on the island on large meadows near Spring Bay. Small groups practice formation flight. Individual couples perform the characteristic dance.

Niagara

english:

The overflow of Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, this is Niagara. The Niagara River is in the upper reaches of an unmanageable water surface with rapids. It has been raining a lot in the past few days. Over the Horseshoe Falls, the Canadian part of Niagara Falls, such masses of water rush that their spray creates a very large cloud. It rains steadily and violently right next to the waterfall. On the opposite bank of the river, the waters of American Falls fall like a giant wall. They alone would be a big attraction. On either side of the border there is a town named Niagara Falls. The American is certainly as dominated by tourism as the Canadian. We have seen many and attractive waterfalls on our travels, especially in Iceland. But the Niagara Falls have a completely different dimension.

Thousand Islands

english:

Vancouver Island in southwestern Canada has the mildest climate in the country, but the people there somewhat begrudge those in the East: the Indian Summer. The intensely coloured foliage of the trees has an almost euphoric effect with a blue sky. Warm, sunny autumn days and cool nights with dry air are the ingredients for the nine oak and especially the approximately 20 maple species to develop their blaze of colour. Especially the strong red tones fascinate us.

Kitesurfer

For lunch, we once again looked for a nice spot at the water, this time at Boucherville at St. Lawrence River, opposite Montreal. While Mrs. Roundgetter prepares the food, a kitesurfer comes, parks nearby and meticulously prepares for kite surfing. Next to our camper he lays out the long lines of the kite. While he puts on his neoprene gear, we drive a few meters further, so that he has enough space and our camper does not get into the lines. Then he lets the kite rise and goes carefully into the shallow water. And finally he rides and flies over the waves. We watch fascinated. Francis, a Frenchman living in Québec for several years, masters the kite and the surfboard.

A group of four men flies their kites choreographed, the commands are given by the right winger.

ESSARTS

The tightly printed tourist guide of the Centre-du-Québec region has lured us to an artistic treasure. At the edge of the village of Saint-Pie-de-Guire lies the Sculpture Park ESSARTS. Artists from various countries are frequently invited to create a work here. More than 50 pieces of art are now set up in a veritable magic forest. Some are on glades, others are integrated into the forest. And this forest is just a gorgeous example of the Indian Summer. In the evening we arrive and have immediately chosen the park strip by the street as a place to stay overnight. Before it gets very dark, we make a first foray through the park. What a pleasure.

The following morning the sun illuminates the total work of art. And as we walk around again, we meet the sculptor Pierre Tessier, who wants to clean a few forest ways. He owns this park, together with his wife Suzanne Ricard, who works as a glass artist. Without further ado Pierre moves the tidying up and leads us through the park. Although his mother tongue is French and ours German, we can talk intensively about modern art and about the individual works in the park. It is, as he put it, a very special Sunday.

Zuckerahorn

english:

Sugar maple

Near Saint Aubert we drove through a forest in the dusk, between whose trees seemingly ropes were stretched. Exactly it was not recognizable in the weak light. That’s what we want to see up close the next morning. There are hose lines and at each tree is a currently closed hose connection. Here is the maple syrup harvest prepared for the coming spring. As we learned from Pierre Tessier, every sugar maple tree is drilled at the beginning of the growing season. Then this network of hoses is used to collect the syrup and direct it to a collection bin. This region, southeast of Quebec City, is a stronghold of maple syrup extraction.
