Vom Strand in Korinthos (Korinth) blicken wir auf den Leuchtturm Melangavi im Golf von Korinth. Auf der anderen Seite des Isthmus von Korinth, im Saronischen Golf, liegen Schiffe auf Reede, die vermutlich darauf warten, von Schleppern durch den Kanal von Korinth geschleppt zu werden. Es sind vergleichsweise kleine Schiffe. Als der Kanal Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts gebaut wurde, waren heutige Schiffsgrößen wohl nicht vorstellbar. Immerhin erspart der gut sechs Kilometer lange Kanal die ertwa 400 km lange Fahrt um den Peloponnes.
Corinth Canal From the beach in Korinthos (Corinth) we look at the lighthouse Melangavi in the Gulf of Corinth. On the other side of the Isthmus of Corinth, in the Saronic Gulf, there lie ships in the roads presumably waiting to be towed by tugboats through the Corinth Canal. They are comparatively small ships. When the canal was built at the end of the 19th century, today’s ship sizes were probably unimaginable. After all, the well-six-kilometer-long canal saves the 400-kilometer-long journey around the Peloponnese.
