Today, the autumn greets. The snowflakes on waking are soon thawed, but fog and dull skies accompany us with short interruptions throughout the day.
It is not really surprising. Along the entire road, the Kluane Ranges stretch along the western side of the Alaska Highway, and the St. Elias Mountains with their giant glaciers behind them. The whole is called Kluane Wildlife Sanctuary, and partly Kluane National Park and Reserve, part of one of the largest protected areas in the world (see also Wrangell – St. Elias National Park).
The commercial campgrounds we see are already closed, their season is over. At Kluane Lake, we find a very nice pitch at the public Congdon Creek Campground (Yukon Government Campground, see Twin Lakes and Little Salmon Lake). The long stretched lake on the east side of the highway is the largest that is completely located in Yukon.
Our pitch is located in the forest just a few meters from the pebble beach of the lake. During a walk along the lakeshore, we discover driftwood with interesting patterns. Among them is a tree trunk that a beaver has worked all around.
