Von den 18 Pinguinarten sind die Königspinguine die zweitgrößten. Sie tragen ihren „Frack“ besonders majestätisch. Seit ein paar Jahren haben sie eine Kolonie auf der Insel Feuerland (Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego). Es ist die einzige in Südamerika, alle anderen sind auf entfernten Inseln rund um die Antarktis. Gemeinsam ist allen die Lage zwischen 45° und 55° Süd.
Hier im Parque Pingüino Rey, nördlich von Cameron, brüten inzwischen rund 150 der Vögel. Ihr Habitat liegt zwischen der Küste der Bahía Inútil und einem kleinen Fluss. Damit sie ungestört sind, wurden in gebührender Entfernung große Beobachtungshütten errichtet, aus denen wir das Geschehen in der Kolonie verfolgen können. Aktuell sehen wir außer vielen erwachsenen drei große, wollige, dunkelbraune Küken.
King penguins
Of the 18 penguin species, the king penguins are the second largest. They wear their „tailcoat“ particularly majestically. For a few years now, they have a colony on the island of Tierra del Fuego (Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego). It is the only one in South America, all the others are on distant islands around Antarctica. What they all have in common is their location between 45° and 55° south.
Here in Parque Pingüino Rey, north of Cameron, around 150 of the birds are now breeding. Their habitat is between the coast of Bahía Inútil and a small river. To ensure that they are undisturbed, large observation shelters have been erected at a reasonable distance from which we can follow what is happening in the colony. Currently we see three large, woolly, dark brown chicks in addition to many adults.
