Von Kotare aus fahren wir nach Westen weiter, zur Tasman Sea. Die Küste bei Tongaporutu ist spektakulär. Von einem Parkplatz am Tongaporutu River geht es nur bei Ebbe zu Fuß im Flussbett lang, das hier von einem ca. 30 m hohen Steilufer gesäumt ist. Nach ein paar hundert Metern erreichen wir den dunklen Strand, der bei Flut tief unter Wasser steht.
So einladend der Strand ist, so gefährlich ist der Aufenthalt dort. Bei einsetzender Flut läuft das teilweise tiefer liegende Flussbett voll und der Rückweg ist abgeschnitten. Wir haben Glück: Von einem einheimischen Muschelsucher, der mit seiner „Ernte“ zurückkehrt, erfahren wir, dass uns noch genügend Zeit bleibt, den Strand zu sehen.
Coastal wilderness
From Kotare we continue west to the Tasman Sea. The coast at Tongaporutu is spectacular. From a parking lot at the Tongaporutu River, it’s only at low tide on foot in the riverbed, which is lined here by a 30 m high bluff. After a few hundred meters we reach the dark beach, which at high tide is deep under water.
As inviting as the beach is, so dangerous is the stay there. When the tide sets in, the partly deeper riverbed runs full and the way back is cut off. We’re lucky: from a native shellfish hunter returning with his „harvest“, we learn that we still have plenty of time to see the beach.
