Auf den ersten Blick erscheint Vóthonas, das Dorf der Höhlenwohnungen, etwas leblos bis morbid. Aber dieser erste Eindruck täuscht. Schon auf dem Weg in das Erosionstal entdecken wir oberhalb des Ortes eine originelle Art, Weinreben vor dem Wind zu schützen. Die alten Rebstöcke sind am Boden um die neuen Triebe gewunden.
Life in the cave village
At first glance, Vóthonas, the village of cave houses, appears lifeless to morbid. But this first impression is deceptive. On the way to the erosion valley, above the village, we discover an original way of protecting grapevines from the wind. The old vines are wound on the ground around the new shoots.
Eidechsen, die sich in den Spalten von Mauern aus groben Steinen sonnen, eine Heuschrecke und Schnecken an Wänden sind die ersten Lebewesen, die wir sehen.
Lizards basking in the cracks of rough stone walls, a grasshopper and snails on walls are the first creatures we see.
Zum Trocknen aufgehängte Wäsche ist ein deutliches Zeichen, dass der Ort nicht verlassen ist. Mittags sind im Ort nur wenige Menschen unterwegs, aber Hunde wachen über ihr Territorium und Katzen sind präsent.
Laundry hung to dry is a clear indication that the place is not deserted. At lunchtime there are only a few people in the village, but dogs watch over their territory and cats are present.
Und dann treffen wir diesen freundlichen alten Herrn auf seinem Esel, der sich über den fremden Besuch im Ort freut und in Englisch mit uns plaudert.
And then we meet this friendly old gentleman on his donkey who is happy about the strange visit in the village and talks with us in English.
