Mit 2600 m und höher ist der Parque Nacional Los Cardones einer der höchsten Orte der Welt, an dem Kakteen wachsen. Er soll die baumförmigen Kandelaberkakteen schützen, umgangssprachlich hier Cardones genannt. Jenseits des Passes Piedra de Molina (3348 m) zeigt sich der Park als ausgedehnte, karge Hochebene, zunächst für einige Kilometer ohne einen Kaktus. Beim Aussichtspunkt Mirador Ojo del Cóndor ändert sich das Bild. Vor uns liegt eine weite Senke, in der unzählige Cardones stehen. Der schnurgerade, 18 km lange „Recta del Tin-Tin“, ein alter Inkaweg zieht sich heute als Asphaltstraße durch die Senke. Jenseits davon rücken die Berge nah an die Straße heran.
Los Cardones National Park
At 2600 m and higher, the Parque Nacional Los Cardones is one of the highest places in the world where cacti grow. It is meant to protect the tree-shaped candelabra cacti, colloquially called cardones here. Beyond the Piedra de Molina pass (3348 m), the park reveals itself as a vast, barren plateau, initially without a cactus for several kilometres. At the Mirador Ojo del Cóndor viewpoint, the picture changes. In front of us is a wide depression with countless cardones. The dead-straight, 18 km long „Recta del Tin-Tin“, an old Inca trail, now runs through the depression as an asphalt road. Beyond it, the mountains come close to the road.
