Das Straßennetz des größten US-Bundesstaats Alaska ist recht überschaubar. Einige Städte haben nur kurze Straßen ins Hinterland, ohne Verbindung zu anderen Städten. Einzelne sind nur an Straßen angebunden, die nach Kanada führen, z.B. Skagway. Ergänzend zum „land based road system“ gibt es das ‚Alaska Marine Highway System‘, ein System von Fährverbindungen entlang der gesamten Pazifikküste Alaskas. Eine Route verbindet Skagway als nördliches Ende mit den Häfen Südost-Alaskas.
Mit dieser Linie fahren wir, allerdings nur bis zur nächsten Station, Haines (das über die Straße auch nur von Kanada erreichbar ist). Tickets haben wir schon am Vortag bei unserer Ankunft in Skagway gekauft. Zur Bestimmung des Tarifs für den Camper Van hat der Mann am Ticketschalter seinen Glaskasten verlassen und mit einem Messrad/Hodometer die Länge des Fahrzeugs vermessen.
Gegen 15:30 Uhr legt das Schiff ab. Die Passage von weniger als einer Stunde führt durch den nördlichen Teil des Lynn Canal, einen Seitenarm des Pazifik, der von teilweise vergletscherten Bergen gesäumt ist.
The road network of the largest US state, Alaska, is quite manageable. Some cities have only short roads to their back country, with no connection to other cities. A few are only tied to roads leading to Canada, e.g. Skagway. In addition to the „land based road system“, there is the Alaska Marine Highway System, a system of ferry connections along the entire Pacific coast of Alaska. One route connects Skagway as the northern end with the ports of South East Alaska.
With this line we sail, but only to the next station, Haines (which is accessible by road through Canada only). We bought the tickets the previous day on our arrival in Skagway. To determine the tariff for the Camper van, the clerk left the glass box at the ticket counter and measured the length of the vehicle with a measuring wheel / odometer.
At around 3:30 pm, the ship departs. The passage of less than an hour leads through the northern part of the Lynn Canal, a side arm of the Pacific, lined with partially glaciated mountains.
