Wir fahren durch die Mani im Südwesten des Peloponnes und erleben eine besonders karge Landschaft, schroff und abweisend, einsam und beinahe menschenleer. Steile Berge, die fast senkrecht ins Meer fallen, Felsen auf denen außer ein paar Olivenbäumen kaum etwas wächst. Und über allem strahlt die Sonne.
Wovon lebten die Menschen hier, als es noch keine Touristen gab? Und wie, in diesen fast fensterlosen Wohntürmen, ohne Terrassen und Gärten, die die Sommerhitze erträglich gemacht hätten? Es heißt, dass sich die einzelnen Familien gegenseitig befehdet und diese Wohntürme zum eigenen Schutz gebaut hätten. Erschreckend! Heute sind viele der Türme restauriert und als Ferienhäuser umgebaut. In einigen Orten leben kaum noch Einheimische.
We drive through the Mani in the south-west of the Peloponnese and experience a particularly barren landscape, rugged and rejecting, lonely and almost deserted. Steep mountains that fall almost vertically into the sea, rocks on which except a few olive trees hardly anything grows. And above all, the sun shines. What were the people here living from when there were no tourists yet? And how, in these almost windowless residential towers, without terraces and gardens that would have made the summer heat bearable? It is said that the individual families feuded with each other and built these residential towers for their own protection. Frightening! Today many of the towers have been restored and transformed to holiday homes. In some places hardly any locals live anymore.
