Seit über 4.000 Jahren stehen auf einem Hügel bei Callanish im Nordwesten der Isle of Lewis die ‚Standing Stones of Callanish‘. In Sichtweite gibt es noch zwei kleinere Steinkreise und weitere auf der ganzen Insel. Aber die reichen nicht annähernd an die Bedeutung dieser Steinsetzung heran. Lediglich Stonehenge in Südengland ist bedeutender (siehe auch Dolmen, Menhire, Trolle und Tiere und besonders Steine, Steine, Steine).
Offenbar ist die Anlage in verschiedenen Epochen um Steingruppen erweitert worden. Verwendet wurden dabei die ältesten Felsen der Welt.
Über Sinn und Zweck der Anlage gibt es beliebig viele Theorien. Die Konstellation der Steine, aber auch die Lage der Hügel in der Umgebung zu einander geben wohl Anlass zu der Annahme, dass Menschen der Jungsteinzeit eine Vorstellung von der Erde als Kugel hatten.
Über die geschichtlichen Fakten und wissenschaftlichen Vermutungen hinaus hat die Anlage eine Ehrfurcht gebietende Wirkung und die Steine haben Ausstrahlung. Dem kann man sich kaum entziehen. Aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln, bei unterschiedlichem Licht, besonders früh morgens und abends wirken die gesamte Anlage und ihre einzelnen Steingruppen jedes mal anders. Der dramatische Himmel bildet die perfekte Bühne.
Die Steine sehen nicht so aus, als seien sie modelliert bzw. behauen worden. Dennoch hat jeder eine eigene ‚Persönlichkeit‘. Manche erwecken den Eindruck, dass sie mit einander kommunizieren.
More than just stones
For more than 4,000 years, the Standing Stones of Callanish have been standing on a hill near Callanish in the northwest of the Isle of Lewis. In sight there are two smaller stone circles and more on the whole island. But those do not reach nearly close the importance of this stone setting. Only Stonehenge in southern England is more important (see also dolmens, menhirs, trolls and animals and especially stones, stones, stones).
Apparently, the system has been expanded with stone groups in different eras. The oldest rocks in the world were used.
There are any number of theories about the purpose of the site. The constellation of the stones, but also the location of the hills in the area to each other probably give rise to the assumption that Neolithic people had an idea of the earth as a sphere.
In addition to the historical facts and scientific assumptions, the plant has awe-inspiring effect and the stones have charisma. You can hardly escape that. From different points of view, with different light, especially early in the morning and in the evening, the entire complex and its individual stone groups look different every time. The dramatic sky is the perfect stage.
The stones do not look like they were modeled or carved. Nevertheless, each has their own ‚personality‘. Some give the impression that they communicate with each other.
