Bei Reisen nach Griechenland denkt man häufig nur an die Inseln. Und auch wir hatten im Frühling 2014 zwei erlebnisreiche Wochen auf Santorini. Aber Griechenland ist so viel mehr. Historische Stätten, antike und mittelalterliche Gebäude und Orte, Ausgrabungsfelder und was es sonst an Mythen- und Geschichtsträchtigem gibt, sind flächendeckend über das ganze Land verteilt. Ein wesentlicher Teil der Wurzeln unserer Kultur liegt hier. Das Festland einschließlich Peloponnes bietet an allen Küsten herrliche Strände.
Hinreißende Landschaften, spektakuläre Nationalparks und faszinierende Naturereignisse haben wir gesehen. Ende Oktober und im November sind wir durch erstaunlich grüne Vegetation gereist. Tagestemperaturen von 24°C zu Beginn bis etwa 18°C Ende November und regelmäßiger Sonnenschein haben uns den Sommer verlängert. Fünfeinhalb Wochen waren wir in Griechenland.
By camper through Greece When traveling to Greece you often think only of the islands. We too had two exciting weeks in Santorini in spring 2014. But Greece is so much more. Historic sites, ancient and mediaeval buildings and towns, archaeological sites and other mythical and historical aspects are spread over the whole country. A major part of the roots of our culture lies here. The mainland including Peloponnese offers beautiful beaches on all shores. We have seen stunning landscapes, spectacular national parks and fascinating natural phenomena. At the end of October and in November we traveled through amazing green vegetation. Daytime temperatures from 24°C at the beginning to about 18°C at the end of November and regular sunshine have extended our summer. For five weeks and a half we have been in Greece.
Fast acht Wochen hat die Reise insgesamt gedauert. Die Entfernung von Deutschland ist erheblich. Mit längerer Fährpassage, z.B. ab Venedig (statt Bari), wäre die Anreise deutlich zu beschleunigen. Aber Italien ist ja auch die eine oder andere Reise wert. Nach unseren sehr guten Erfahrungen in Frankreich mit ‚France Passion‘ haben wir das italienische Pendant ‚Fattore Amico‘ beschafft und uns auf einige Tage in Italien gefreut. Bei zwei Übernachtungen mit leckeren Einkäufen hat es sich für uns schon amortisiert.
Dass wir den Aufenthalt in Italien nicht verlängert haben, lag daran, dass die Vermüllung der Landschaft zunahm, je weiter wir nach Süden kamen. Norditalien haben wir als sehr sauber erlebt, aber ab einer imaginären Grenze liegt an den Straßen zunehmend Müll. Selbst im Nationalpark del Gargano haben wir wilde Müllkippen gesehen. Es hat uns entsetzt. Auf der Rückreise wollten wir ab Ancona noch ein wenig den Norden Italiens bereisen, aber der streikbedingte Ausfall der Fähren hat das vereitelt.
Müll liegt leider auch in Griechenland fast überall in der Landschaft. Wir sind viele Straßen gefahren, an denen es aussah wie auf einer Mülldeponie. Fast jede Böschung an Wegen und Straßen wird als wilde Müllkippe genutzt. Das ist umso erstaunlicher, als es überall Müllcontainer gibt, die auch geleert werden, selbst an entlegenen Orten. Und an vielen Straßen liegen links und rechts der Fahrbahn so viele Plastikflaschen, als ob jeder einzelne Grieche dort welche aus dem Fahrzeug geworfen hätte. In wenigen Gebieten haben wir keinen Müll herumliegen gesehen. Eine weitere üble Umweltverschmutzung ist das selbstverständliche Verbrennen von Olivenzweigen und -blättern, von Gartenabfällen und sonstigem Abfall. Praktisch jeder nimmt sich heraus, einen Ort oder ein ganzes Tal zu verräuchern.
Almost eight weeks the trip has taken altogether. The distance from Germany is considerable. With longer ferry passages, e.g. from Venice (instead of Bari), the journey would be significantly accelerated. But Italy is well worth one or another trip. After our very good experience in France with ‘France Passion’ we got the Italian counterpart, ‘Fattore Amico’ and we were looking forward to a few days in Italy. With two overnight stays with delicious purchases it has already paid off for us. The reason not to extend our stay in Italy was due to the fact that the further we went south, the more the landscape was covered with rubbish. Northern Italy we have experienced as very clean, but starting from an imaginary border there is increasingly garbage on the roads. Even in the National Park of Gargano we have seen wild dumps. It terrified us. On the return journey we wanted to travel from Ancona a bit further through northern Italy, but the strike-conditioned cancellation of the ferries has foiled that. Garbage is unfortunately also in Greece almost everywhere in the landscape. We drove a lot of roads that looked like a waste didposal. Almost every bank of ways and roads is used as a wild dump. This is all the more surprising as there are garbage containers everywhere that get emptied, even in remote locations. And on many streets on the left and right of the road, there are so many plastic bottles, as if every single Greek had thrown them out of the car. In a few areas we have seen no garbage lying around. Another nasty environmental pollution is the burning of olive branches and leaves, of garden waste and other garbage. Virtually everyone takes the right to smoke a place or a whole valley.
Die Straßen in Griechenland sind, mit Ausnahme von Schnellstraßen, in schlechtem bis katastrophalem Zustand. Allgegenwärtig sind Schlaglöcher, in Auflösung begriffene, verrutschte oder abgesackte Fahrbahnen, abgebrochene und völlig abgerutschte Böschungen. Häufig sind die Fahrbahnränder von Unkraut und Büschen weit überwuchert. Innerhalb weniger zehn Meter kann eine gut ausgebaute Straße in einen üblen Acker übergehen oder in irgendeine andere Landschaft. Daher sind wir praktisch dauernd mit Allrad-Antrieb gefahren, mehr als in Island. Über vielen Straßen, die meistens ohnehin schon schmal sind, hängen links und rechts Äste von Bäumen und Sträuchern, die offenbar nie beschnitten werden. Für jedes Fahrzeug größer als ein Kleinwagen sind das unausweichbare Hindernisse, insbesondere für Wohnmobile.
Griechenland besteht fast vollständig aus Bergen und Gebirgen. Straßen sind Kurven und Serpentinen. Ein gerader Straßenabschnitt von mehr als einem Kilometer kann als Sensation gelten. Das heißt auch, dass Fahren, abgesehen von den wenigen Schnellstraßen, anstrengend ist und man nur relativ langsam voran kommt.
The roads in Greece, with the exception of highways, are in bad to catastrophic condition. Omnipresent are pot holes, dissolving roads, slipped or sloping lanes, broken and completely slipped slopes. Frequently, the edges of the roads are far overgrown by weeds and bushes. Within a few tens of meters a well-developed road can change into a bad field or into some other landscape. This is why we have been driving almost continuously with all-wheel drive, more than in Iceland. Above many roads, which are usually narrow anyway, branches of trees and shrubs hang on the left and right, which are clearly never cut. For every vehicle larger than a small car these are inescapable obstacles, especially for mobile homes. Greece consists almost entirely of mountains. Roads are curves and serpentines. A straight road section of more than one kilometer can be considered a sensation. This also means that driving, apart from the few expressways, is exhausting and progress is only relatively slow.
Der Straßenverkehr in Griechenland verläuft ähnlich, wie in anderen südlichen Ländern, jedoch zurückhaltender, weniger aggressiv. Verkehrsregeln werden selten eingehalten. Aber Griechen rechnen auch damit, dass die Anderen sich ebenfalls nicht an Überholverbote halten und gehen gelassen damit um.
Unsere Reise im Spätherbst durch Griechenland hatte u. A. den Vorteil, dass unser Wohnmobil fast überall das einzige war. Stellplätze standen uns mit wenigen Ausnahmen exklusiv zur Verfügung, sodass wir das Fahrzeug nach unseren Bedürfnissen aufstellen und ausrichten konnten.
Frei stehen ist offiziell in Griechenland nicht erlaubt. Wesentliche Gründe für das Verbot sind vermutlich die Interessen von Campingplatzbetreibern und Waldbrände im Sommer (nicht nur außer Kontrolle geratene Abfallfeuer). Fast alle Campingplätze waren jedoch geschlossen und die Gefahr von Waldbränden war jahreszeitlich bedingt gering. Immerhin müssen Wohnmobile in Griechenland mit einem Feuerlöscher ausgestattet sein. Den haben wir rechtzeitig beschafft und installiert.
Campingplätze, die im Herbst/Winter fast flächendeckend geschlossen sind, lassen die weitgehend fehlende Wohnmobil-Infrastruktur zum Problem werden. Wir nutzen Campingplätze möglichst wenig, aber hin und wieder brauchen wir einen zum Entsorgen, zum Wäsche Waschen, zum Batterie Aufladen. So hätten wir ohne die Womo-Führer ‚Griechenland‘ und ‚Peloponnes‘erhebliche Schwierigkeiten gehabt. Stellplätze haben wir fast ausschließlich durch diese beiden Führer gefunden. Hinzu kamen unverzichtbare Angaben zur Versorgung mit Frischwasser und zu Toiletten, von denen die meisten allerdings im Spätherbst geschlossen waren.
Frischwasser gibt es fast überall, häufig jedoch als Brunnen. Mit Schlauch geht dann wenig, mit unserem Betankungsfilter geht ohne Druck gar nichts. Aber es gibt in vielen Orten, auch in größeren Städten, an den Straßen Wasserhähne, die an das örtliche Trinkwassernetz angeschlossen sind. Diese Zapfstellen werden offenbar auch von den Anwohnern rege genutzt, sodass nicht mit abgestandenem Wasser zu rechnen ist.
Unsere Ziele und viele weitere Informationen haben wir den Reiseführern ‚Nord- und Mittel-Griechenland‘ sowie ‚Peloponnes‘ aus dem Michael Müller Verlag entnommen und den oben genannten Womo-Führern. Zur Orientierung hatten wir außerdem die Autokarte ‚Griechenland‘ und die erheblich detailliertere Auto + Freizeitkarte ‚Peloponnes‘, beide von freytag & berndt.
Road traffic in Greece is similar to that in other southern countries, but more reserved, less aggressive. Traffic rules are rarely observed. But Greeks also count on the fact that others also do not stick to bans on passing and handle it unhurried. Our journey in the late autumn through Greece had the advantage, among other things, that our camper was almost the only one. Pitches were exclusively available to us, with few exceptions, so that we could set up and arrange the vehicle according to our needs. Free standing is officially not allowed in Greece. The main reasons for the ban are probably the interests of campground owners and forest fires in the summer (not only out of control waste fires). Almost all campsites were closed, however, and the danger of forest fires was limited due to the season. After all, motorhomes in Greece must be equipped with a fire extinguisher. We got one and installed it in time. Campsites, which are almost all closed in autumn / winter, make the largely missing camper infrastructure a problem. We use campings as little as possible, but occasionally we need one for disposal, washing clothes, for battery charging. So we would have had trouble without the camper guides ‘Greece’ and ‘Peloponnese’. Pitches we have found almost exclusively through these two guides. Additionally they contained indispensable information on the supply of fresh water and toilets, most of which were closed in the late autumn, however. Fresh water is available almost everywhere, but often as a well. With a hose little works then, with our refueling filter nothing works without pressure. But in many places, even in larger cities, at the streets, there are water taps, which are connected to the local drinking water network. These dispensing points are clearly used by the local residents, so that water is not be expected mouldy. We have taken our destinations and much more information from the travel guides ‘North and Central Greece’ as well as ‘Peloponnese’ from the Michael Müller Publishing and the aforementioned camper guides. For orientation, we also had the car map ‚Greece‘ and the much more detailed car + leisure map ‘Peloponnese’, both by freytag & berndt.
Mehr als auf anderen Reisen waren die Straßenkarten und Führer zur Navigation wichtig. Denn ein großes Ärgernis war in Griechenland unser Navigationssystem. Wir haben den Eindruck, dass dort, mit Ausnahme von Schnellstraßen, keine Unterschiede zwischen verschiedensten Straßen und Wegen programmiert sind. Regelmäßig wurden abenteuerliche Routen über extrem schlechte bis unpassierbare Gassen, Feldwege, Gebirgspfade bis hin zu Trampelpfaden empfohlen. Bei Geschwindigkeiten unter Schnellstraßenniveau wurden ständig links und rechts der Route alle Wege, teilweise sogar nicht vorhandene, als Straßen angezeigt. Mehrmals haben uns die Routenempfehlungen unseres Navi in Griechenland in allergrößte Schwierigkeiten gebracht. Das war umso übler, als die Straßenverhältnisse sehr schlecht sind, wie oben beschrieben. In anderen Ländern, auch auf An- und Rückreise, hatten wir solche Probleme nicht. Daher liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass aus Griechenland keine besseren Daten verfügbar sind.
More than on other journeys the road maps and guides were important for navigation. A major annoyance in Greece was our navigation system. We have the impression that there, except for expressways, no differences are programmed between different roads and ways. Regularly adventurous routes were recommended over extremely bad to impassable alleys, dirt roads, mountain pathways and tramp paths. At speeds below expressway level, all routes, partly even non-existent, were displayed as roads on the left and right of the route. Several times in Greece our Navi has given us route recommendations that brought us in the greatest difficulties. This was all the worse since road conditions are very bad, as described above. In other countries, also on the way back and forth, we did not have such problems. It is therefore likely that there is no better data available from Greece.
Besonders begeistert haben uns in Griechenland:
- zunächst einmal die Griechen selbst. Mit den meisten konnten wir uns in Englisch verständigen, gelegentlich auch in Deutsch. Diese Reise war auch darum sehr angenehm, weil wir uns willkommen gefühlt haben, wie selten. In Europa haben wir nirgends sonst solche Offenheit für Touristen und Gastfreundlichkeit erlebt, wie von den Griechen. Das ist ein wesentlicher Grund, dass wir gern wiederkommen wollen.

We were particularly enthusiastic in Greece about: – first of all the Greeks themselves. With most of them we were able to communicate in English, sometimes in German. This trip was among other things very pleasant because we felt welcome, as seldom. In Europe, we have nowhere else experienced such openness for tourists and hospitality, as from the Greeks. This is a major reason that we would like to go there again. – the Vikos-Aóos national park

Die genannten Womo-Führer enthalten auch Empfehlungen für An- und Rückreise über den Balkan, einschließlich diverser Routen und Stellplätze. Das hat uns zur Rückreise über Albanien ermutigt. Ohne diese konkreten Informationen hätten wir das vermutlich nicht gewagt. Und dann war die Fahrt durch Albanien, Montenegro, Kroatien, Bosnien-Herzegowina, nochmal Kroatien, Slowenien und Österreich ziemlich normal. Bei den Grenzkontrollen zu und von Albanien sowie Montenegro haben wir uns ein wenig an die ehemaligen Ostblock-Grenzen erinnert.
Besonders in Albanien hätten wir gern etwas entdeckt, das unsere Neugier geweckt, uns zum Fotografieren angeregt hätte. Auch eine weitere Übernachtung war denkbar. Stattdessen haben wir mit gesteigertem Entsetzen gesehen, wie an der ganzen Durchfahrtsroute die Landschaft noch erheblich mehr vermüllt ist, als wir in Italien oder Griechenland gesehen haben. Fast alle Fließgewässer, die wir dort gesehen haben, sind an ihren Ufern mit Plastikmüll in den umgebenden Bäumen und Sträuchern versetzt. Offenbar wird ungehemmt in Bäche und Flüsse gekippt, in der Erwartung, dass das Wasser „entsorgt“.
Montenegro und Kroatien dagegen, haben angenehme Eindrücke hinterlassen: Interessante Landschaften, gute Infrastruktur, freundliche Menschen. Diese Länder werden wir bestimmt nochmal intensiv bereisen.

The mentioned camper guides also provide recommendations for travel back and forth across the Balkans, including various routes and parking spaces. This has encouraged us to return via Albania. Without this specific information, we probably would not have dared. And then the journey through Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, again Croatia, Slovenia and Austria was quite normal. In border controls to and from Albania as well as Montenegro, we have remembered the former borders of the Eastern Bloc. Especially in Albania, we would have liked to discover something that would have aroused our curiosity, would have inspired us to take pictures. Also another night was conceivable. Instead, we saw with increased horror how the entire landscape is even much more littered than we saw in Italy or Greece. Almost all of the rivers that we have seen are covered with plastic waste in their surrounding trees and shrubs along their shores. Apparently, garbage is unrestrained thrown into streams and rivers, in the expectation that the water „disposes“. Montenegro and Croatia, however, have left pleasant impressions: interesting landscapes, good infrastructure, friendly people. We will surely travel these countries again.
