„Mull of Kintyre, oh mist rolling in from the sea, my desire is always to be here, oh Mull of Kintyre“ – die Älteren erinnern sich an diese Hymne auf das südliche Ende der längsten Halbinsel Schottlands.
„Mull of Kintyre, oh mist rolling in from the sea, my desire is always to be here, oh Mull of Kintyre“ – the elders remember this hymn to the southern end of Scotland’s longest peninsula. Paul McCartney lived here for a few years on a farm in the green hills and published the song in 1977, which led the charts for weeks.
As dawn sets in, we drive from the southeastern Southend up the southernmost road that exists here, towards the lighthouse on the west coast. It is a „pimple road„, extremely narrow, extremely curvy with breathtaking slopes and gradients. We enjoy the all-wheel drive, although the road is paved. Before it gets dark, we have found a place for the night in the mountains. And then „the sky burns“ above Mull of Kintyre, we have rarely seen such a sunset.
Tiefblau liegt die Irische See weit unten. Der Wind treibt von Süden Wolken über die Berge.
The next morning we continue up the road to the barrier. A locked gate blocks the road that leads on an extreme slope to the lighthouse below. So we have to continue on foot. Behind us lies the landscape in the fog, ahead the sky is blue. Deep blue, the Irish Sea lies far below. The wind drives clouds from the south over the mountains.
We need about 45 minutes for the descent on serpentines, at least three hundred meters deep. And the lighthouse stands on a cliff, still so high above the sea that it hardly has a tower.
Mrs. Roundgetter has examined the foghorn and found an old steam boiler inside the building.
The resurgence is very exhausting and takes almost twice as long as the descent. In the distance, Ireland is dimly recognizable.
