Beim Blick auf die Landkarte fällt östlich von Wolfsburg ein Gebiet auf, das wie ein Schachbrettmuster von Kanälen durchzogen ist: Der Drömling, ein etwa 340 km² großes und wenig besiedeltes Niederungsgebiet, eine in Deutschland einzigartige Niedermoorlandschaft. Das frühere Sumpfgebiet wurde im 18. Jahrhundert durch Entwässerung von einer Natur- in eine Kulturlandschaft umgewandelt. Heute ist es Naturpark und Biosphärenreservat.
Wir folgen dem Wirtschaftsweg entlang eines der Kanäle zwischen Buchhorst und Köckte. Dabei stoßen wir auf ein ausgedehntes Areal, in dem Äcker von sehr breiten Wildblumen-Streifen umgeben sind. Es ist eine Freude, darin viele Vögel zwitschern zu hören, die bei stürmischem Wind allerdings den Flugbetrieb eingestellt haben.
Drömling Nature Park
Looking at the map, an area east of Wolfsburg stands out, criss-crossed by canals like a chessboard pattern: the Drömling, a sparsely populated lowland area of about 340 km², a lowland moor landscape unique in Germany. The former marshland was transformed from a natural to a cultivated landscape by drainage in the 18th century. Today it is a nature park and biosphere reserve.
We follow the farm track along one of the canals between Buchhorst and Köckte. We come across an extensive area where fields are surrounded by very wide strips of wildflowers. It is a pleasure to hear many birds chirping in them, however they have closed down the air traffic in the stormy wind.
