Nordöstlich des Grand Canyon, zwischen Lees Ferry und der Einmüdung des Little Colorado River, fließt vor der mächtigen Wand der Vermillion Cliffs der Colorado River durch den Marble Canyon. Der ist vergleichsweise schmal aber tief, mit senkrechten Felswänden. Marmor (engl.: Marble) gibt es hier nicht; die Bezeichnung ist wohl einem Scherz eines Geologen und Entdeckers zu verdanken.
Der Grand Canyon ist auf seiner Länge von etwa 450 km ein gigantisches Verkehrshindernis. Die kürzeste Verbindung zwischen seinem Südrand (South Rim) und dem Nordrand (North Rim) führt über die Navajo Bridge. Die überquert seit 1929 den Marble Canyon. Direkt daneben wurde 1995 eine baugleiche Brücke errichtet, um den zunehmenden Verkehr zu bewältigen. Die historische Brücke ist nur noch für Fußgänger freigegeben. Von der können wir die neue Brücke im Detail sehen und im Canyon Boote beobachten.
To the northeast of the Grand Canyon, between Lees Ferry and the mouth of the Little Colorado River, the Colorado River flows through Marble Canyon in front of the mighty wall of the Vermillion Cliffs. It is comparatively narrow but deep, with vertical rock faces. There is no marble here; the name is probably a joke by a geologist and explorer.
The Grand Canyon is a gigantic traffic obstacle over its length of around 450 kilometres. The shortest connection between its South Rim and the North Rim is via the Navajo Bridge. It has crossed Marble Canyon since 1929. An identical bridge was built right next to it in 1995 to cope with the increasing traffic. The historic bridge is now only open to pedestrians. From here we can see the new bridge in detail and watch boats in the canyon.
