Neuseeland

Ankunft in Auckland

New Zealand

For some years New Zealand has topped our travel priority list. In the middle of October the time has come: We exchange North German autumn for spring at the other end of the world.

Travel planning

New Zealand is located on the other side of the globe, opposite southern Europe (especially Spain) and is about ¾ of the size of Germany. It consists essentially of two islands inhabited by 4.5 million people, with 30 million sheep and 5 million cattle.

Already in February we booked: flights, hotel and a motorhome for five and a half weeks. After a mixed experience with Apollo campers in Australia, we researched the Motorhome offerings in New Zealand on the Internet and chose a ‚Breeze 2‘ from Wilderness Motorhomes. Then we located a Hamburg travel agency where we can book it.

Arrival

On the 19th of October we fly with Emirates from Hamburg to Dubai and from there on to Auckland. We are en route for one and a half days, the flight from Dubai to Sydney alone took 14 hours. Arrived in Auckland we are exhausted and very happy that we have a good hotel in the middle of the city for the next two nights. The time lag of eleven hours will certainly give us a few days trouble.

Arrival in Auckland

Beautiful spring weather with blue sky and the very tidy, wonderfully green Auckland receive us. One-third of the New Zealand population lives in the country’s largest city in the north of the North Island, which is 1.4 million inhabitants, and is slightly smaller than Hamburg. The city is located on about 50 inactive volcanoes at two seas, the Tasman Sea in the west and the Pacific in the east.

Takeover of the motorhome

Two days after our arrival, we take over the Motorhome, a fairly new Bürstner Brevio t 600. Wilderness Motorhomes prides itself on its international staff and in fact we are welcomed by two Germans. A young man completes the written formalities with us, a young woman makes the best and most comprehensive instruction in a mobile home that we have ever experienced.

The motorhome built in Germany has a special feature: The vehicle is designed for the left-hand traffic in New Zealand as a right-hand drive, but the cabin compartment is designed for left-hand drive vehicles. Therefore, its entrance door is on the road side.

First destination: Orewa

After stowing the contents of our suitcases in cupboards and compartments, we head to a large supermarket nearby and stock up on food and drinking water for the first few days. There is little time left after that to reach our first destination outside Auckland.

We want to travel along the ragged east coast to the north (south of the equator in the north is the warmest). The northern tip of the North Island has Mediterranean climate. In Orewa, a very popular seaside resort 30 kilometers north of Auckland, we find a place for the night in a parking lot at the beach. Orewa Beach is one of the longest beaches in the Auckland region.
