This is the entire blog of the travel stops on our North American trip in spring from Moab (near Arches NP) west to the Pacific, along the coast to the north and back east again. It includes the journey from Moab in Utah west through Nevada and California, further north along the Pacific Ocean and back east through Oregon and Idaho to the Craters of the Moon National Monument from mid-April to mid-May (on two long pages): Unmittelbar vor Crescent City steht auf einer winzigen Insel im Pazifik der niedliche Leuchtturm Battery Point Light. Den wollen wir fotografieren, der Herumkommer will ihn in seine Sammlung aufnehmen. Wir haben Glück, denn die Insel ist gerade noch trockenen Fußes erreichbar. Auf der Insel erleben wir eine Überraschung: Sie ist großflächig von pinkfarbenen, Boden deckenden Blumen bewachsen, die in voller Blüte stehen. Der Leuchtturm wird zur Nebensache. Nachdem wir die Blütenpracht ausgiebig genossen haben, müssen wir zurück ans Festland. Noch mal Glück gehabt: Die Flut überspült den Inselzugang und wir sind die letzten, die es noch ohne nasse Füße schaffen.
Flower bed with lighthouse Just off Crescent City on a tiny island in the Pacific is the cute Battery Point Light lighthouse. We want to photograph it, the Aroundgetter wants to add it to his collection. We’re lucky, because the island is only just accessible on dry land. We are in for a surprise on the island: it is covered in large areas of pink-coloured, ground-covering flowers that are in full bloom. The lighthouse becomes a minor matter. After enjoying the splendour of the flowers to the full, we have to return to the mainland. We are lucky again: the tide washes over the access to the island and we are the last to make it back without getting our feet wet.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Auf dem Weg in den Redwoods National Park überqueren wir in der Smith River National Recreation Area bei Crescent City den Smith River. Der begeistert uns mit seinem intensiven Aquamarin in verschiedenen Nuancen. Stille Passagen und Stromschnellen wechseln sich ab und ein reißender Bach strömt hinein.
On the way to the Redwoods National Park, we cross the Smith River in the Smith River National Recreation Area near Crescent City. The river inspires us with its intense aquamarine colour in various shades. Quiet passages alternate with rapids and a torrential stream flows in.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . – . . . . . . . . . . . . Bei Crescent City gehen diverse Redwood State Parks (des Bundesstaats Kalifornien) und der Redwood National Park in einander über. Wieder ist es schwierig, die großartigen, riesigen Bäume zu fotografieren, aber immerhin ist jetzt der Himmel blau.
Near Crescent City, various Redwood State Parks (of the state of California) and the Redwood National Park merge into one another. Again, it’s difficult to photograph the huge, magnificent trees, but at least the sky is blue now.

Sunset coast The Oregon coast, dotted with rocks and rocky islands, is not only mystical in the morning. It is also predestined for romantic sunsets, partly because it is a west coast.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Vom sehr langen McPhillips Beach am Cape Kiwanda bei Pacific City ist ein großer Abschnitt für Fahrzeuge freigegeben. Das ist eine schöne Gelegenheit für uns, auf dem Strand zu parken und dort unser Frühstück mit Meerblick zu genießen. Der Strand ist natürlich beliebt. Familien picknicken hier. Aber auch für Pelikane ist er attraktiv. Zunächst haben wir den Eindruck, sie üben ein wenig Formationsflug. Doch dann fallen uns zwei Lagunen auf, die zu sieden scheinen. Pelikane stürzen sich in diese Lagunen und machen reiche Beute. Ähnlich wie man es von Basstölpeln kennt, tauchen sie Schnabel voran aus dem Flug ins Wasser.
Nosediving pelicans A large section of the very long McPhillips Beach at Cape Kiwanda near Pacific City is open to vehicles. This is a great opportunity for us to park on the beach and enjoy our breakfast with a sea view. The beach is naturally popular. Families picnic here. But it is also attractive for pelicans. At first we get the impression that they are practising some formation flying. But then we notice two lagoons that seem to be boiling. Pelicans dive into these lagoons and make rich pickings. Similar to gannets, they dive beak-first from flight into the water.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Netarts Bay verblüfft uns. Zunächst bekommen wir von einem Aussichtspunkt einen Überblick über einen Traumbadestrand. Einige Kilometer weiter beobachten wir Menschen, die bei Ebbe auf einem Strandabschnitt Muscheln sammeln. Aushänge an einem Schwarzen Brett informieren in vier Sprachen (englisch, spanisch und zwei ostasiatische), welche vier Muschelarten gesammelt werden dürfen, mit welchen Werkzeugen und wie viele. Schließlich entdecken wir mehrere Gruppen Robben, die sich an abgelegenen Stränden sonnen.
Bay for many uses Netarts Bay amazes us. Firstly, we get an overview of a dream beach from a vantage point. Finally, we discover several groups of seals sunbathing on remote beaches.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Flankiert von zwei idyllischen Buchten mit Felseninselchen erstreckt sich Cape Meares als Klippe in den Pazifik. Auf der Spitze steht der kleine gleichnamige Leuchtturm.
Flanked by two idyllic bays with rocky islets, Cape Meares extends as a cliff into the Pacific. The small lighthouse of the same name stands at the top.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . Über viele Kilometer ist der Columbia River Grenzfluss zwischen den US-Bundesstaaten Oregon im Süden und Washington im Norden. Oberhalb des Flusses finden wir am Memaloose Overlook bei Mosier einen schönen, ruhigen Übernachtungsplatz. Von hier oben hat die Landschaft Ähnlichkeit mit dem Rheintal in Deutschland. Tatsächlich heißt ein Ort am gegenüber liegenden Ufer „Bingen“. Bei genauem Hinsehen fallen die Basalte auf, vulkanisches Gestein, durch das sich der Columbia River hier einen Durchbruch geschaffen hat.
For many kilometres, the Columbia River forms the border between the US states of Oregon in the south and Washington in the north. Above the river, we find a nice, quiet place to spend the night at Memaloose Overlook near Mosier. From up here, the landscape resembles the Rhine Valley in Germany. In fact, a town on the opposite bank is called „Bingen“. A closer look reveals the basalts, volcanic rock through which the Columbia River has created a breach here.
. . . . . . . . . Eigentlich wollten wir nur einen ruhigen Übernachtungsplatz abseits des Verkehrslärms der Interstate bei Meacham. Doch dann stellt sich dieser Aussichtspunkt als außergewöhnlich heraus. Der Blick geht über sanfte Hügel. Hinzu kommen zahllose Frühlingsblumen in erstaunlicher Vielfalt.
Actually, we just wanted a quiet place to spend the night away from the traffic noise of the interstate near Meacham. But then this viewpoint turns out to be extraordinary. The view sweeps over rolling hills. There are also countless spring flowers in an astonishing variety.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Die Grenze zwischen den US-Bundesstaaten Oregon (im Westen) und Idaho (im Osten) verläuft mitten durch den Hells Canyon. Der kommt uns gar nicht höllisch vor, denn der Snake River ist im Canyon zu einem bildschönen Stausee aufgestaut. Erst jenseits des Staudamms (mit Wasserkraftwerk) erleben wir die höllische Seite des Canyon. Allerdings nur für wenige hundert Meter, dann endet die Straße. Auf der Rückfahrt liegt doch tatsächlich eine Schlange (engl.: snake), die sich dort offenbar sonnt, auf der Straße entlang des Snake River.
The border between the US states of Oregon (to the west) and Idaho (to the east) runs right through the centre of Hells Canyon. It doesn’t seem hellish at all, as the Snake River is dammed up in the canyon to form a beautiful reservoir. We only experience the hellish side of the canyon beyond the dam (with hydroelectric power station). But only for a few hundred metres, then the road ends. On the way back, there is actually a snake sunbathing on the road along the Snake River.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Die Landschaft im Süden von Idaho wurde vor langer Zeit von Vulkanen gestaltet. Vielfach ist das noch erkennbar, an alter Lava und an Basalten. Bei Hagerman sehen wir ein Phänomen, das uns vom wahrscheinlich schönsten Wasserfall Islands vertraut ist. Hier wie dort versickert ein Fluss in porösem Lavagestein und tritt an anderer Stelle aus einer Abbruchkante aus vielen Öffnungen aus. In Island heißt das ‚Hraunfossar‘ (Lava-Wasserfälle), in Idaho ‚1000 springs‘ (Tausend Quellen). Bedauerlicherweise ist dieses Naturwunder sehr schlecht ausgeschildert und nur zu einem kleinen Teil zugänglich. Aus der Wasserkraft wird Elektrizität gewonnen.
Thousand springs The landscape in southern Idaho was shaped by volcanoes a long time ago. This is still recognisable in many places, in old lava and basalts. Near Hagerman, we see a phenomenon familiar to us from what is probably the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland. Here, as there, a river seeps into porous lava rock and elsewhere emerges from a break-off edge with many openings. In Iceland this is called ‚Hraunfossar‚ (lava waterfalls), in Idaho ‚1000 springs‘. Unfortunately, this natural wonder is very poorly signposted and only a small part of it is accessible. Electricity is generated from the water power.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Das Stadtbild von Twin Falls ist wesentlich geprägt vom Canyon des Snake River und der Perrine Bridge darüber. Es ist derselbe Fluss, der auch den weit entfernten Hells Canyon geschaffen hat. Hier hat er sich eine beeindruckende Schlucht durch mehrere Lagen dicker Basaltfelsen gebahnt.
The cityscape of Twin Falls is essentially characterised by the Snake River canyon and the Perrine Bridge over it. It is the same river that created the distant Hells Canyon. Here it has carved an impressive gorge through several layers of thick basalt rock.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . Von der südlichen Canyon-Wand der Snake River Schlucht in Twin Falls stürzt ein Wasserfall herab. Der Perrine Coulee Falls hat sich einen Halbkreis und darunter eine Hohlkehle aus dem Basalt gewaschen. Dadurch ist es möglich, hinter dem Wasserfall her zu gehen. Der Spaß ist mit einer leichten Sprühdusche verbunden. Aber angesichts sommerlicher Temperaturen ist das eine willkommene Erfrischung.
A waterfall cascades from the southern canyon wall of the Snake River Gorge at Twin Falls. Perrine Coulee Falls has carved a semi-circle and a cave out of the basalt below. This makes it possible to walk behind the waterfall. The fun comes with a light spray shower. But given the summer temperatures, this is a welcome refreshment.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Östlich der Stadt Twin Falls hat sich der Snake River zwei beeindruckende Wasserfälle geschaffen. Der erste ist Shoshone Falls. Der ist wirklich schön, aber an den großflächigen nackten Felsen ist zu erkennen, dass er zeitweise noch wesentlich imposanter ist.
Waterfalls near Twin Falls East of the city of Twin Falls, the Snake River has created two impressive waterfalls. The first is Shoshone Falls. It is really beautiful, but you can see from the large bare rocks that it is even more impressive at times.
. . . Noch ein paar Kilometer weiter östlich stürzt der Fluss über die für die nahe gelegene Stadt namensgebenden Twin Falls. Tatsächlich waren hier mal Zwillingsfälle doch einer ist einem Wasserkraftwerk zum Opfer gefallen. Das Wasser für den verbliebenen Wasserfall wird vom Kraftwerk nur jeweils zeitlich befristet frei gegeben.
A few kilometres further east, the river plunges over the Twin Falls that give the nearby town its name. There used to be twin falls here, but one has fallen victim to a hydroelectric power station. The water for the remaining waterfall is only released by the power station for limited periods of time.
. . . 1923 hat ein Geologe erklärt, diese Landschaft sei wie die Oberfläche des Mondes, durch ein Teleskop gesehen. Von Astronauten wissen wir heute, dass die meisten Mondkrater von Meteoriteneinschlägen stammen und nicht vulkanisch sind. Die „Craters of the Moon“ sind definitiv vulkanischen Ursprungs, dennoch ist der Name des Parks nach wie vor: Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. Bei der Anfahrt von Westen her fällt uns ein See auf, der von alter Lava eingefasst ist. Schwarze zerbröselte Lava und Aschehügel bilden die Umgebung des Besucherzentrums. Diesmal haben wir Pech, die Loop Road, die zu den Hauptattraktionen des Parks führt, ist gesperrt; sie wird instand gesetzt. Mithilfe unseres Navi finden wir eine andere Route durch den Park. Während wir sie ansteuern, zieht ein Unwetter mit Schnee und Schneeregen auf. Aber auf unserer Route bleibt es auf Distanz und wir entdecken eine Landschaft aufgebrochener alter Lava.
Moon craters? In 1923, a geologist declared that this landscape was like the surface of the moon as seen through a telescope. Today we know from astronauts that most lunar craters originate from meteorite impacts and are not volcanic. The „Craters of the Moon“ are definitely of volcanic origin, but the name of the park is still the same: Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. On the approach from the west, we notice a lake surrounded by ancient lava. Black crumbled lava and mounds of ash form the surroundings of the visitor centre. This time we are unlucky, the Loop Road leading to the park’s main attractions is closed; it is being repaired. With the help of our sat nav, we find another route through the park. As we head for it, a storm with snow and sleet rolls in. But on our route it stays at a distance and we discover a landscape of broken old lava.

A few kilometres further on, we observe people collecting shells on a stretch of beach at low tide. Notices on a notice board provide information in four languages (English, Spanish and two East Asian languages) about which four types of shells can be collected, with which tools and how many.
