Ort ohne Zeit

Place without time

The small place of Achiltibuie and the surrounding villages in the west of the northern Scottish Highlands are an epitome of seclusion. Here the time seems to have stopped.

The road that leads there from Lochinver is an adventure. It is asphalted, but not in good condition, of course, single-lane with regular ‚Passing Places‘, small bays to the left or right, to allow oncoming traffic or passing by. Vehicles over 8 m in length are not permitted, some curves are just too tight. Our motorhome with a width of 1.99 m fits just on this bad bike path. But this is unspeakably uneven, so that the vehicle tends to jump even at low speeds, also it is rain-soaked. Just in case I switch on the four-wheel drive, which leads to a better driving feeling.

What makes this route even worse is the fact that the landscape is wild-romantic, we have not seen anything like it. But there is no way to stop and take pictures.

In the village of Badenscallie we find at the sea a very nice pitch for the night, framed by the stony beach, a picturesque house ruin and the old cemetery.

There is also a wonderful sand beach. Black sheep are not the exception here, but the herd. And on the continuation to Ullapool we had a wonderful place in the Coigach mountains for the lunch break.
