Tsauchab-Tal
Von Sesriem nach Sossusvlei sind 65 km zurückzulegen, etwa die Hälfte davon im Tal des Trockenflusses Tsauchab. Der hat seinen Ursprung am Südrand des Naukluft-Gebirges und verläuft von dort nach Westen. Nur in wenigen Jahren erreicht sein Wasser die Endpfanne (Afrikaans: Vlei) und versickert spätestens dort. Den Atlantik erreicht der Fluss nie.
Tsauchab Valley
From Sesriem to Sossusvlei are 65 km to cover, about half of them in the valley of the dry river Tsauchab. It has its origin at the southern edge of the Naukluft Mountains and runs from there to the west. Die rund 170 m hohe Düne 45 (45 km vom Parkeingang) ist leicht von der Straße aus erreichbar, ein Parkplatz erleichtert den Zugang. Daher wird sie gern bestiegen.

Trotz der Hitze, der wir hier ausgesetzt sind, sobald wir das Fahrzeug mit seiner Klimaanlage verlassen, ist diese Landschaft euphorisierend. Wir können uns nicht sattsehen an den verschiedensten Formen der Dünen, an den grafischen Mustern, den Kontrasten aus hellgelbem Gras, orange-rötlichem Sand und mehr oder weniger blauem Himmel. Und gelegentlich stehen den geraden und geschwungenen Linien ein einzelner Kameldornbaum, eine Baumgruppe oder Springböcke gegenüber.
