Kamele im Outback
Wir haben natürlich davon gehört, dass einige hunderttausend Kamele durch das Outback ziehen. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurden einige der Dromedare in Australien eingeführt als Last- und Reittiere bei der Erschließung des Landes. Irgendwann wurden sie nicht mehr gebraucht und frei gelassen. Offenkundig sind ihre Lebensbedingungen in den ariden Gebieten Australiens sehr gut, denn sie vermehren sich rasant. Und plötzlich steht da neben der Straße eine Herde Kamele. Das passiert uns ja nicht alle Tage.
Camels in the outback
Of course, we’ve heard that hundreds of thousands of camels are moving through the outback. In the 19th century, some of the dromedaries were introduced in Australia as pack animals and mounts in the development of the country. At some point they were no longer needed and released. Obviously, their living conditions in the arid areas of Australia are very good, because they multiply rapidly. And suddenly there is a herd of camels beside the road. That does not happen to us every day.
