Ubehebe Crater
Im Norden des Death Valley National Park liegt ein Vulkankraterfeld. Der auffälligste dieser Krater ist der Ubehebe Crater. Laut Wikipedia ist Ubehebe ein indianisches Wort und bedeutet „Großer Korb im Fels“. Vor grob zweitausend Jahren kam hier Magma in Kontakt mit Grundwasser, das führte zu einer Dampf- und Gasexplosion. 230 m tief ist der Krater und hat einen Durchmesser von etwa einem Kilometer. Dies ist Amerika und so können wir auf asphaltierter Straße bis auf den Parkplatz auf dem Kraterrand fahren. Dort machen wir Frühstück mit Aussicht.
In the north of Death Valley National Park lies a volcanic crater field. The most striking of these craters is the Ubehebe Crater. According to Wikipedia, Ubehebe is a Native American word meaning „large basket in the rock“. Roughly two thousand years ago, magma came into contact with groundwater here, which led to an explosion of steam and gas. The crater is 230 metres deep and has a diameter of around one kilometre. This is America and so we can drive on a tarmac road to the car park on the crater rim. There we have breakfast with a view.
