Zwischen 200.000 und 300.000 Palmen wachsen im El Palmeral de Elche (valencianisch Palmerar d’Elx). Das ist einzigartig in Europa und UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Das Klima ist hier, westlich von Alicante, günstig für Palmen, hinzu kommt ein ausgefeiltes Bewässerungssystem. Die Phönizier sollen den Palmenhain gepflanzt haben, aber erst bei den Arabern gedieh er durch fachkundige Pflege. Der besonders schöne Park, mitten in der Stadt, mit verschiedenen Springbrunnen, versammelt nicht nur Palmen (überwiegend Dattelpalmen) sondern auch andere meist exotische Gewächse. Über den Park hinaus stehen in der ganzen Stadt und der weiteren Umgebung praktisch überall Palmen.
Palm grove of Elche
Between 200,000 and 300,000 palm trees grow in El Palmeral de Elche (Palmerar d’Elx in Valencian). This is unique in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The climate here, west of Alicante, is favourable for palm trees, and there is also a sophisticated irrigation system. The Phoenicians are said to have planted the palm grove, but it was only under Arab rule that it flourished thanks to expert care. The particularly beautiful park, located in the middle of the city and featuring various fountains, is home not only to palm trees (mainly date palms) but also to other, mostly exotic plants. Beyond the park, palm trees can be found practically everywhere throughout the city and the surrounding area.
