Pancake Rocks

Already before our arrival, the camper rental Wilderness Motorhomes sent us the ‚NZ Frenzy‘ Guidebooks (one volume each for North and South Islands) as PDF files. They are written in a bit crazy, American English, but very detailed. The author has traveled to many interesting places in New Zealand that are not found in other guides. Some of his recommendations are strenuous hikes and other activities that are more suitable for athletic young people. But some destinations he describes are also very interesting to us, e.g. Tawhia Falls and Mud Pool, but others too.

Especially grateful we are for the information about the Pancake Rocks in Punakaiki, which we want to see today. These are limestone cliffs, which consist of many clearly separated layers, just like stacked pancakes. Different hard areas of the rock have been flushed from the sea to caves, underground channels and open shafts. And so blowholes have formed, through which the surf rushes fountains. The urgent recommendation in NZ Frenzy is to wait for the tide before visiting Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. The times of high tides are posted at the Visitor Center. So in the morning we explored the jungles around the town during the low tide.

About 3 pm it’s finally time. The path leads first through dense, tall vegetation. Then we come to the first Pancake Rocks.

Even before we see the Blowholes, again and again the surf is to hear like a bang. And the closer we get to them, the more we realize that rocks and fountains are only part of the drama. The flood-fueled rush of the surf in the subterranean cavities causes a tremendous impact on every new wave. Certainly this is one of the absolute highlights of our trip.
