Berglöwe, León de Montaña, wird in Argentinien der Puma auch genannt. Eine Felsformation am Meer, die einem Löwenkopf ähnelt, ist namensgebend für den Monte León Nationalpark. Dieser Park, südlich von Comandante Luis Piedra Buena, schützt typische patagonische Steppe, Schluchten und einen beeindruckenden Teil der Atlantikküste. Er ist auch das Habitat von Pumas.
Die Straße im Park führt durch das „Tal der Guanacos“ mit sehr karger Vegetation. Auf den „Cabeza de León“ (Löwenkopf) führt ein Holzbohlenweg hinauf zu einem Aussichtspunkt mit Blick auf eine Seelöwenkolonie.
Mountain lion, León de Montaña, is also the name given to the puma in Argentina. A rock formation by the sea that resembles a lion’s head gives the Monte León National Park its name. This park, south of Comandante Luis Piedra Buena, protects typical Patagonian steppe, canyons and an impressive part of the Atlantic coast. It is also the habitat of pumas.
The road in the park leads through the „Valley of Guanacos“ with very sparse vegetation. On the „Cabeza de León“ (Lion’s Head) a wooden plank path leads up to a viewpoint with a view of a sea lion colony.

Auf dem Rückweg machen wir noch einen Halt und wandern zur Pinguinkolonie am Meer. Die zweieinhalb Kilometer je Richtung führen durch etwas unwegsames Gelände. Hinzu kommt der typisch steife Wind Patagoniens, einschließlich aufgewirbeltem Staub. So wird die Wanderung zu einer extremen Anstrengung. Auf Schildern wird gewarnt, nicht allein diesen Weg zu gehen; der Namensgeber des Parks könnte den einzelnen Wanderer für Beute halten. Vom Aussichtspunkt am Ende des Wegs geht der Blick nach links auf den „Löwenkopf“. Nach rechts leuchtet das Meer in verschiedenen Türkistönen. Unterhalb tummeln sich Magellan-Pinguine am Strand. In den Bruthöhlen entdecken wir die ersten Pinguin-Küken, dunkelgraue kleine Puschel.
On the way back, we make another stop and hike to the penguin colony by the sea. The two and a half kilometres each way lead through somewhat rough terrain. In addition, there is the typical stiff wind of Patagonia, including swirling dust. This makes the hike an extreme effort. Signs warn not to walk this trail alone; the park’s namesake might mistake the lone hiker for prey. From the vantage point at the end of the path, the view goes to the left to the „Lion’s Head“. To the right, the sea glows in various shades of turquoise. Below, Magellan penguins cavort on the beach. In the breeding burrows we discover the first penguin chicks, dark grey little fluffy ones.
