This post is dedicated to Patricia, who has a lot of experience sailing in ice around Spitzbergen / Svalbard and who’s birthday is today.
With the Sarfaq Ittuk thru the Disko Bay
The last hours of our voyage with the Sarfaq Ittuk along the greenlandic west coast have begun. After a short stop at Aasiaat we travel through the Disko Bay heading to Ilulissat, the final point of the run. In the distance single icebergs drift along, that look like castles, cathedrals or “our“ Hamburg Elbphilharmonie.
The finale of the voyage couldn’t be more grand: Immediately before reaching Ilulissat we go directly along the front of the giant icebergs pushing out of the icefjord Kangia into the open sea. We have considered the icebergs in southern Greenland big. However, compared to these ones they are only icecubes.
