Am frühen Nachmittag starten wir von Humahuaca, auf 2940 m Höhe, nach Osten, zum Cerro Hornocal (Hornocal-Hügel). Der „Hügel“ hat eine Höhe von 4350 m. Das ist so, als würden wir vom höchsten deutschen Gipfel, der Zugspitze, bis 130 m unterhalb des Matterhorn-Gipfels fahren! Die 25 km Straße zum Hügel hinauf ist eine schlechte Schotterpiste mit erheblichem Waschbrett-Anteil. Die ersten Kilometer haben nur geringe Steigung. Aber dann wird es immer steiler, mit immer engeren Serpentinen. Im Reiseführer wird gemahnt: „Vorsicht: Auf die Kühlwassertemperatur achten.“ Tatsächlich müssen wir mehrere Pausen machen, um den Motor herunter zu kühlen. Und unterhalb der Aussicht auf die kurvige Route steht am Straßenrand ein abgestellter Pkw, mit Wasserfleck unter dem Motor.

In the early afternoon we start from Humahuaca, at 2940 m altitude, towards the east, to the Cerro Hornocal (Hornocal Hill). The „hill“ has an altitude of 4350 m. That is like driving from the highest German peak, the Zugspitze, to 130 m below the summit of the Matterhorn! The 25 km road up to the hill is a bad gravel road with a considerable amount of washboard. The first kilometres have only a slight incline. But then it gets steeper and steeper, with narrower and narrower switchbacks. The guidebook warns: „Caution: Watch the coolant temperature.“ In fact, we have to take several breaks to cool down the engine. And below the view of the winding route, there is a parked car on the side of the road, with a water stain under the engine.

Am Ziel angekommen breitet sich vor uns eines der spektakulärsten Panoramen der Quebrada de Humahuaca aus: Der 14-Farben-Berg. Manche Menschen wollen über 30 Farben sehen. Hinzu kommen die geometrischen Formen der Bergwand. Mehr als 10 km lang ist die umgekehrte V-förmige Zickzack-Formation. Die Luft ist dünn hier oben und kühl, während das Wohnmobil von der Sonne aufgeheizt ist. Wir bleiben nicht lange, um Höhenkrankheit vorzubeugen; die soll erst bei mehreren Stunden Aufenthalt in der Höhe ohne Akklimatisation eintreten. Herab geht es leichter, aber die Rüttelstrecke stresst.
Once we reach our destination, one of the most spectacular panoramas of the Quebrada de Humahuaca spreads out before us: The 14-colour mountain. Some people mean to see over 30 colours. Then there are the geometric shapes of the mountain face. More than 10 km long is the inverted V-shaped zigzag formation. The air is thin up here and cool, while the camper is heated by the sun. We don’t stay long to prevent altitude sickness; it is said to set in only after several hours at altitude without acclimatisation. The descent is easier, but the jolting track is stressful.
