Zum Berufjörður
Egilsstaðir ist der zentrale Ort der Ostfjorde. Hier decken wir uns mit Vorräten ein, das Sortiment ist in beiden Supermärkten gut. Außerdem bekommen wir hier in einem Computer-Fachgeschäft die SIM-Karte für den mobilen Internetzugang. Sowohl im Supermarkt in Seyðisfjörður als auch bei der Post in Egilsstaðir war sie nicht verfügbar. Die Prepaid-Karte von Siminn ist mal richtig einfach in der Handhabung, anders als wir es bisher aus Deutschland, Frankreich, Großbritannien und Spanien gewohnt sind.
Auf einem Wanderparkplatz am Ortsrand bei einem zauseligen Birkenwald haben wir einen Stellplatz für die Nacht gefunden. Der nächste Tag beginnt, wie der erste in Island spät geendet ist: Sonnig.
Bei den Vorbereitungen für diese Reise haben wir den Eindruck gewonnen, dass inzwischen im Sommer in Island mit so etwas wie Massentourismus zu rechnen ist, vorwiegend im Raum Reykjavík und an der Südküste. Um dem möglichst auszuweichen, wollen wir zunächst die Südküste von Ost nach West bereisen. Also müssen wir zügig in den Südosten der Insel.
Ein paar Kilometer südlich von Egilsstaðir an der Ringstraße macht uns der Wegweiser zu einem Wasserkraftwerk neugierig. Das Kraftwerk selbst ist eher unscheinbar. Das überschüssige Wasser aus dem Stausee schießt in mehreren parallelen Kaskaden durch bizarr zerklüftete Felsen in einen Canyon.
To the Berufjörður
Egilsstaðir is the central town of the eastern fjords. Here, we cover up with supplies, the assortment is good in both supermarkets. We also get the SIM card for mobile Internet access in a computer specialist shop. It was not available either at the supermarket in Seyðisfjörður or at the post office in Egilsstaðir. The prepaid card from Siminn is really easy to use, unlike we are used to from Germany, France, Great Britain and Spain.
On a hiking car park on the outskirts at a scrubby birch forest we found a pitch for the night. The next day begins like the first one in Iceland ended: Sunny.
During the preparations for this trip, we have gained the impression that meanwhile in the summer, Iceland is likely to have some kind of mass tourism, mainly in the area of Reykjavík and on the south coast. In order to avoid this, we first want to visit the south coast from east to west. So we have to move quickly to the southeast of the island.
A few kilometers south of Egilsstaðir on the ring road, the signpost to a hydroelectric power station makes us curious. The power plant itself is rather unimposing. The excess water from the reservoir shoots into a canyon through bizarrely jagged rocks in several parallel cascades.
Die Strecke der Ringstraße von Egilsstaðir nach Süden, abschnittsweise Schotterstraße, wird in Reiseführern kaum erwähnt. Die Abkürzung über die Schotterstraße 939 direkt zum Berufjörður ist nicht einmal in allen Karten verzeichnet. Das Gefälle von 17%, vor dem gewarnt wird, schreckt uns nicht, seit wir auf der Isle of Skye in Schottland 20% und mehr bewältigt haben. Und dann ist es der Landschaft völlig egal, dass sie nicht populär ist. Die Route entpuppt sich mit Schneeschauern und gleißendem Sonnenschein als Knüller.
The route of the ring road from Egilsstaðir to the south, sectionally gravel road, is hardly mentioned in tour guides. The abbreviation over the gravel road 939 directly to the Berufjörður is not even shown in all maps. The 17% slope, which is being warned before, does not frighten us since we have managed 20% or more on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. And then it does not matter to the landscape that it is not popular. The route turns out to be a big hit with snow showers and glittering sunshine.
Im Berufjörður beobachten wir diverse Wasservögel, vor allem verschiedene Enten.
In the Berufjörður we observe various waterfowl, mainly different ducks.
Am nordwestlichen Ende des Fjords zweigt nach Westen eine Allradpiste ins Tal der Fossá ab, dem Wasserfalltal Fossárdalur. Hier „erproben“ wir unseren Allradantrieb und entdecken eine wildromantische Landschaft und finden einen einsamen Stellplatz.
At the north-west end of the fjord, a four-wheel-drive track runs to the valley of the Fossá, the waterfall valley Fossárdalur. Here we „test“ our all-wheel drive and discover a wild-romantic landscape and find a secluded pitch.
