Von Tongaporutu führt der State Highway 3 nach Norden etwa 20 km direkt am Meer entlang. Dann, bei Awakino, macht er einen scharfen Schwenk landeinwärts. Hier haben wir unmittelbar am Strand einen Stellplatz mit grandioser Aussicht gefunden. In der Ferne reckt Mount Taranaki seinen perfekt geformten Vulkankegel in den Himmel. Kein Wunder, dass der Strand pechschwarz ist: Lava ist seine Basis.

From Tongaporutu the State Highway 3 leads north about 20 km along the sea. Then, at Awakino, it makes a sharp turn inland. Here we have found a pitch right at the beach with stunning views. In the distance, Mount Taranaki lifts his perfectly shaped volcanic cone into the sky. No wonder the beach is pitch black: lava is its base.
