US Highway 1
Für Autofahrer besteht der Großraum Los Angeles vor Allem aus Straßen und insbesondere Highways. Die sind möglichst bis in die letzten Verzweigungen sechs- bis zehnspurig, mit Verkehrsknoten in mehreren Etagen sowie Staus zu jeder Tageszeit. Aber unser Blech ist heil geblieben und der Fahrer nicht verrückt geworden, obwohl beides höchstwahrscheinlich war.
Als Belohnung für den Stress haben wir Highway 1, der als eine der schönsten Straßen der Welt gilt. Mehr als 1.000 km entlang des Pazifik führt er von südlich Los Angeles bis jenseits San Francisco nach Nordkalifornien. Als besonders schön gelten die 350 km zwischen Morro Bay und Half Moon Bay. In diesem Abschnitt, nördlich von San Simeon, erstreckt sich der Große Süden, Big Sur. Die Gegend ist ziemlich menschenleer, wir sehen nur einzelne Briefkästen. Wildromantisch fallen die Berge als Steilküste ins Meer. Der einsetzende Frühling lässt Kalifornischen Mohn und andere Wildblumen sprießen.
Die Fahrbahn des Hwy 1 ist hier passagenweise rau, an vielen Stellen ist sie ausgebessert. Vor ein paar Jahren hat ein Erdrutsch die Straße unpassierbar gemacht. Etwa 10 Meilen nördlich von Gorda ist sie darum gesperrt. Die Sperrung ist weit südlich und mehrfach angekündigt. Wir sind bis zur Sperrung und wieder zurück gefahren. Dabei haben wir bildschöne Landschaften erlebt.
For motorists, the greater Los Angeles area consists primarily of roads and, in particular, highways. These are six to ten lanes wide, right down to the last junction, with traffic junctions on several levels and traffic jams at all times of the day. But our car body remained intact and the driver didn’t go crazy, although both were highly likely.
As a reward for the stress, we have Highway 1, which is considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world. It runs for more than 1,000 kilometres along the Pacific Ocean from south of Los Angeles to northern California beyond San Francisco. The 350 kilometres between Morro Bay and Half Moon Bay are considered particularly beautiful. In this section, north of San Simeon, is the Big South, Big Sur. The area is pretty much deserted, we only see a few letterboxes. The mountains fall into the sea in a wild and romantic cliff face. The onset of spring causes California poppies and other wildflowers to sprout.
The carriageway of Hwy 1 is rough in places here, but has been repaired in many places. A few years ago, a landslide made the road impassable. It is therefore closed about 10 miles north of Gorda. The closure is far to the south and has been announced several times. We drove to the closure and back again. We experienced some beautiful landscapes along the way.
