Savannah
„Schöner können amerikanische Städte kaum sein als Savannah am gleichnamigen Fluss“ schreibt unser Reiseführer. Das wollen wir sehen.
1733 wurde Savannah als erste Niederlassung der neuen nach dem englischen König George benannten Kolonie gegründet. Im historischen Viertel der Stadt sehen wir Häuser in diversen Baustilen des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Immer wieder begeistern uns die riesigen Bäume in vielen kleinen Parks. Nicht nur die Bäume sind mit der Aufsitzerpflanze „Spanisches Moos“ / „Louisianamoos“ dekoriert.
Das Kopfsteinpflaster der Uferpromenade ist für unser kleines Mietfahrzeug eine Herausforderung. Hier stehen noch die alten Baumwolllagerhäuser. Auf der dem Fluss zugewandten Seite sind sie schäbig, das Erdgeschoss wird als Souvenirläden und Fast Food „Restaurants“ genutzt. Die der Stadt zugewandten Fassaden sind repräsentativ gestaltet und gut erhalten, darunter auch die Baumwollbörse der Stadt (Savannah Cotton Exchange). Die goldene Kuppel des Rathauses zeugt, wie die ganze historische Stadt, vom früheren Reichtum.
„American cities can hardly be more beautiful than Savannah on the river of the same name,“ writes our travel guide. That’s what we want to see.
Savannah was founded in 1733 as the first settlement of the new colony named after the English King George. In the historic quarter of the city, we see houses in various architectural styles from the 18th and 19th centuries. The huge trees in the many small parks never cease to amaze us. It is not only the trees that are decorated with the „Spanish moss“ / „Louisiana moss“.
The cobblestones of the riverside promenade are a challenge for our small hire vehicle. The old cotton warehouses still stand here. On the side facing the river, they are shabby and the ground floor is used as souvenir shops and fast food „restaurants“. The facades facing the city are prestigiously designed and well preserved, including the Savannah Cotton Exchange. The golden dome of the town hall, like the entire historic city, bears witness to its former wealth.
